Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I had to go shopping yesterday...something I don't do often, because I hate to shop...LOL
While I was there I noticed something very telling about the 'state of affairs' people are in these days.

I've always shopped very thriftily, and used to be able to find great deals in the 'mark down bin' in the meat section.
There used to be awsome cuts of meat that I could get for half the price, bring them home and put them in the freezer for later.
With me living in a 'wealthy area' ...it was not unusual for me to find whoe legs of Lamb, or a nice standing rib roast in there...beautiful steaks and chops.

Not anymore.
The past couple of times I've been there...it has been like a 'fight' to try and even see what is left to pick over...so many people there looking thru it.
They aren't just taking the very nice cuts of meat...they are cleaning the sucker out!
I've never seen this happen in this area before.
I'm in an area where houses start at $500,000, and end up in the several million dollar mark.

When it starts showing up in areas like this...people slashing costs, and families 'cleaning out the mark down bin"...they are starting to hurt as much as 'the middle class' people are.
That dosen't bode well for our Economy .
These are the people that own the business' that hire other people to work for them.
Also professional types like Neuro Surgeons, top Attorney's, ect.
If these people fall hard like the middle class has...I don't think there is anything that can be done to pull the Country up out of this Depression that we've sunk into so deep.
Because these people are the last in line to fall, before the Giants do...they are sort of like 'mini giants', and they provide a lot of people with jobs, or jobs are supported by their spending .( like the lawn service people, the housekeepers, private schools, interior designers, furniture makers, ect.).

Anyone else notice something like this happening in their area lately?

Actually, no. I've been surprised to see that the affluent people are still spending as foolishly luxurious as they always have. Then again, so am I.

Economy still seems okay in Arkansas for now. At least the high end restaurants are doing okay. I do buisness with them everyday.

It's good to hear that it isn't 'widespread' yet...that means that there is still hope for some sort of 'comeback'.

Here in Canada, I've noticed that grocery stores have stopped marking down the meat by 50%, now it's only a 30% discount. It's like they all got together and decided this. Strange.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
We have nothing like a meat markdown bin here. But when my cash runs low, I focus on more nutritious low-cost foods, like beans, on-sales cheeses, veggies from the low-end veggie market in the next town. The special from the meat market in the other next town over.

I still always see people here filling carts with non-food, diet soda, frozen dinners, bagged snack foods, cookies and boxed pastries, the stuff that cannot keep you alive. People buy this stuff actually believing it is food!! and necessary to their lives. It is no wonder why most of us are overweight and sick. Feed us junk, make us sick, and keep the medical industry going strong. Why can't people smarten up?

...end of rant.

Sounds like your neighborhood is living in denial. It's all about "appearances" and the reality is those "wealthy" neighbors will "keep up with the Jonses'" even if it means EATING the Jonses'!

I have noticed that there doesn't seem to be as much inventory as there used to be. My local chain store used to be full to the brim on the shelves and the aisles were almost impassable with floor displays. Now it seems that there are limited numbers of items on the shelves and less choices and I can pass another cart just about anywhere that I please. Also prices have risen by 15-20% over the last year or so.

I noticed that my favorite carrot cake in Randalls is lately missing a bottom, I think store personnel is eating bits of it and then puts it on shelves...very sad news, indeed.

I've noticed people stocking up on toilet paper and wonder if they are glp-ers LOL
Yesterday I was parked next to a Porsche SUV and really couldn't see the difference in the way it looked compared to a Toyota Highlander or any other SUV. I'm sure the engine is really great or something, but it made me think if that person bought a cheaper suv and saved $25,000 they could give that money to something like Operation Smile and change 100 kids lives forever OR... they could impress their friends. Too bad people don't think that way.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I haven't noticed that in my stores and also shop in affluent areas.

I own a store in a very wealthy area people are still spending, but are very cautious. I never used to hear how they have to watch how they spend, they used to just spend.

I have heard how many of my customers lost lots, and lots of money in the market collapse. One of my customers had his complete life savings invested in Lehman Bros.

Definitely, the same here for at least one year. Even the high end department stores have much wider isles which had previously been jammed. Inventories are being kept to bare minimum JIT(just in time)

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I have noticed that at my grocery too. I don't live in an affluent part of town but I was shocked to take a can of baked beans off the shelf and, with the exception of a row of cans across the front of the shelf, there was nothing behind them! The shelves all looked perfectly stocked until you take one from the row. After I saw this I went around and pulled several items and discovered this alarming practice! They have created a facade of abundance by pulling all items to the front and not restocking. Maybe it was at the end of the day (idk) or maybe the stock boy is just lazy. I will give them the benefit of the doubt but if it IS from lack of inventory on our FOOD SUPPLY, better start hedging our bets!

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I haven't noticed this so much at the local store where I regularly shop [since it's a smaller, non-chain grocery where I know the owners]. HOWEVER: the last time I was shopping at ALDI'S [where I've been a customer for over 15 years] I noticed a subtle shift in their customer base. No longer peopled by shoppers in simple housedresses and bluejeans their clientele now numbers quite a few sporting trendy designer duds and a I'm-richer-than-you-are attitude as they paw the same discounted merchandise as I.

Perhaps they think they've "discovered" something the rest of us knew all along... that a spiffy label on any product doesn't necessarily mean it's better or worth a higher price?

ALDI'S has consistently offered quality food items [including an amazing array of European imports] for a lower price since those two German brothers founded it decades ago. This change in people's economic status only levels the playing field a little bit more, and maybe - just maybe, those "haves" will start to understand what it's like to be a "have-not."

Yes! I've noticed that more now than ever. In fact a large chain store near me recently reorganized to compensate for months of obviously empty shelves. They closed-off a huge area once occupied by inventory and reduced the size and spacing of the remaining shelves. Real-time downsizing?

It's hard to believe that we're in a Depression.

It's certainly not evident when passing by the casino's, they are always FULL!

I've noticed some of that too.
It hasn't been as drastic a change as in other areas, but I have noticed that there are not as many good 'sales' around as there used to be.
I do believe that the Grocery people have sat down and made some decisions about 'base line prices', and 'discount prices', and are trying to keep from losing money these days.

It's incredible but true...so many people do not realize that those 'convenience foods", are actually Junk Foods, and are making them sick.
It's also astounding that most people today, don't know the basic "food groups', and what their proportions are supposed to be.
It's like people have become 'thoughtless eaters', and just consume whatever is handed to them for the least amount of money.

That is why the poorest communities are more obese because junk food like hotdogs and frozen pizzas are so cheap compared to fresh fruit and veggies.Preparing for my first garden right now. I'm clueless but after paying $1.50 for one bellpepper this year I knew it was time to get real.

I spoke to the security guard at the local supermarket and he sez shoplifting is thru the roof....I also see alot more people pushing a cart around and eating the food off the shelves....empty packages tossed into corners and hidden behind displays....they used to have a "pay by the pound " hot food buffet, now it has a "helper" standing by to keep people from taking "samples"....

this is in a middle class supermarket that is surrounded by 200K+ condo buildings.....

I have noticed this too, and it was 1 of the first signs I saw of the change.
First the store started cutting back on the high end cuts of meat...leg of lamb disappeared several years ago, and hasn't come back.
I've also noticed them stop carrying lines of stuff...like Bumblebee canned Salmon, wild caught.
They just don't carry it anymore.
I bought the last 10 cans they had, because they had them marked for 'clearance'.
When I was there yesterday...there have been many more items that they used to carry that aren't avail. anymore.
I've also noticed how the shelves aren't as full, either...cans stacked to the front, like another poster below this one said.
I know these aren't 'huge changes' , but they are very telling of what's happening these days.
