Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...

Listen to the first couple of minutes of this Keiser Report where they talk about the new customer trend at WalMart.

Thanks for the video...:)

It's alarming to hear that!
But, I can see truth in it, even though I rarely ever shop there.
I have noticed more and more people with the 'food stamp' cards these days.
Never used to see those around here in my area.....but they are showing up now.
I had to wait inline behind a woman using 1 of those just the other day.

I know I had a very telling conversation with a check out guy a couple of months back...was complaining about how crowded it was. He told me I picked the wrong day to shop...because it is the day of the month that Seniors get their checks, and come in to shop on the 'Senior Discount Days"
So, old people are having to try and save as much as possible too...having to wait to shop, until the day the check is posted to their accounts, and they are being targeted by the stores....like a mini competition to see who can 'get their first of the month money '.

Used to work in a grocery store in Northern Ohio about 15 years ago when in high school and the first of the month traffic back then was unbearable. Then I was disgusted to see the people who always had one full cart of food to purchase with their food stamps and another full cart of beer and other garbage that they of course had the cash to pay for but could not purchase with food stamps. Always had a couple of kids wearing expensive clothes and we had to help carry their stuff to their cars that were of course new and more expensive than what my parents could afford because they refused to ever live off the system.

I imagine today it is a different story and there are plenty of people who are really only surviving off the system. Just as was indicated by the story mentioned in the clip, the modern day bread lines are at the grocery stores at the first of the month. Generally best to avoid grocery stores and banks the first couple of days of month to avoid the hassle and the emotional drain of witnessing the real state of our country today both economically and socially.

Anyone notice this...

Tropicana OJ...was 64oz...now smaller
Ice cream used to sell in half-gallons...now 1 3/4 quarts
Yogurt... 8oz cups now 6oz

Oh yes. They also have the cojones to claim that the same food in smaller containers is healthier and/or has less fat, calories, sodium etc.

Yes, I have noticed a change in grocery shopping in the city where I live. Two women I have know that only shopped at the high end grocery stores I recently spotted at a box store that has the lowest prices in town. Of course they acted like they didn't see me. Very telling...

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
It's hard to believe that we're in a Depression.

It's certainly not evident when passing by the casino's, they are always FULL!

Funny you mention the Casino's...
I go there regularly with my Dad.
We go at least twice a month when he gets his checks.
I have noticed a huge differance in the Casio.
People do not 'win' like they used to, even just a couple of years ago.
The Casino dosen't give you near the amount of 'free money' that they used to, or free stuff for coming and playing, like they used to do.
Because people aren't winning like they used to, and the Casino has stopped giving away the free stuff....there are less people there than used to be.
We used to have to go at a crazy hour of day, like 3 a.m., to avoid the crowds of people.
Not anymore.
We can pick any hour of the day , any day of the week, and it is not crowded like it was before.

WHAT!?

No more "free drinks and never-ending buffets"....why would ANYONE go? You have to know the House is RIGGED, anyway.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1109769

Nope...none of that anymore!!!
No more lil books with the 'free $25" to get you come and play either.
Now it's $10, at best, and they have totally removed all 'free food'( used to get a coupon in the lil book for a free $10 food, anywhere you wanted to spend it at the Casino).

I go...because it's the only place my Dad likes to go to...it's the only time I can get him to leave the house...:P
We know it's always been rigged, but it used to be 'less rigged' than it is now.
We used to go over there and sometimes win $1200, $1500 apiece just on 1 machine.
Now, we never hit anything that big anymore.
At best, a couple of hundred bucks.
We never take more than we know we 'can afford to lose', but it would be nice to have a couple of hits, so we could actually go again, or spend a little longer there, or at least recover some of what 'we've lost' before we leave the place.
I know Casinos are a business, and they too need to generate money, but if they don't let the gamblers win a bit more...soon there will be no one left to gamble.
People will just stop going, because all the 'fun' has been taken away.
No on likes to just go lose a couple hundred bucks at a time...never win, trip after trip.

A couple of times a week, I just go to the local super market, get a cart, and just walk around and make myself a sandwich or two.

Eat it in the store, and then leave.

But that's just me.

I appreciate your honesty.
Are you doing it because you don't have the money to pay for what you are eating, or do you just like to do that?
I'm not trying to be mean when I ask....
LOL..My ex could not walk into a Kroger, without walking around drinking a chocolate milk, that he never paid for.
He told me he did it, because he felt like the 'store owed him' that chocolate milk, because they were so expensive on everything else.

Thanks for the compliment OP. In the 70's my dad {single parent of two} was laid off and we lived on rice and lentils fresh garden veggies whole wheat bread .Never got a sniffle that year at all and it was one of the worst winters I can remember. So cheap can be healthy but I'm sure I wouldn't be popular with my kids !! LOL
 Quoting: Curious Housewife 907170

You're welcome...:)
I think you are gonna weather this storm just fine...LOL..the kids wil just have to get over it!

I remeber the 70's too...coffee and sugar were outrageous, lines for miles around gas stations...
I think we may be a bit better prepared than those that didn''t grow up during that time.
While it wasn't as bad as the Great Depression, it sure did give us a good taste of it, and we remeber that taste still, today.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
massachusetts here.

everything is slowing down, EVERYTHING. it is happening over a long period of time, so people arent noticing so much except for the effects on their personal lives.
milk was 4.15 a gallon yesterday.
lots of strip malls sitting vacant as well, or nearly vacant.

from what i've seen regarding OPs story, 3 things.

1. that is absolutely the case, more and more i see it when i go shopping
2. it seems as though they are trying to dupe us into thinking that prices arent going up on everything. case in point: a loaf of bread that was 1.79 last week was "on sale" this week for 1.79, ten cents off the "normal price" of 1.89. which means next week that loaf of bread will be 1.89.
3. the average age of retail employees has probably gone up 15 years in the last 3.

hang on folks, this is just the beginning. peace

Thanks for your response, sharing with us what you've noticed.
I think you are right about the big picture that is developing.

It gets overwhelming, tying to coordinate everything like that all at once...the right store, on the right day, that has items you have coupons for, that are also going to be 'on sale' that week...:P

Here in Canada, I've noticed that grocery stores have stopped marking down the meat by 50%, now it's only a 30% discount. It's like they all got together and decided this. Strange.

Sounds like Loblaws/Superstore and their little pink stickers.

What irks me is those jerks at Sobeys would rather sell slightly older cakes, veggies, etc. for pig slop rather than marking things down so people don't get used to buying things at a discount.
 Quoting: Lily

You know, that kinda thing upsets me too...
There are a lot of places that just 'throw out' the leftover food from Kitchens in restaurants, or big grocery stores...when it could easily be put in a truck and sent to a Food Pantry, or a homeless shelter.
It's so much waste! just blows my mind!

Atleast the store you mentioned isn't putting it in the trash, like so many do...it's still going to feed a living thing.

I do agree though, they should offer them to humans at a discount first, before they are sold as animal feed.

Indianapolis, Indiana are here.

Lots of home sales springing up in the neighborhood in the $250k and up area, but no one is selling anything.

We traveled to Texas this year and found nearly half of the billboards along the route were leasing. Anyone else notice lot's of blank billboards?

Lot's of empty office buildings but of course we build new ones instead of using the old ones.

Walked in Bob Evans on Sunday Morning at 11:00ish and was seated immediately. I always have to wait 15-20 minutes for a seat.

Everyone is asking for tons of big stuff on freecycle, cars, etc.

Empty parking spots in the fancy mall, last year you had to circle for a while.

My neighbors are still acting like there is no tomorrow buying expensive stuff like cars, invisible fences, furniture, etc. We buy used cars, freecycle, buy clothes when they are on sale at Kohls, and eat out once every two weeks or so.

Lots of good info OP. Wish my grandparents were still here! Love to pick their brain ! My grandmother never used a toothbrush, she used willow branches that were frayed at the end with baking "sodie" and some peroxide never went to the dentist had most of her teeth. The willow has same properties of aspirin.

We're here to learn...;)

Yep, those old timers sure did know how to 'get by', and it didn't feel like you were suffering!
I can see a return to this way, as being a good thing for people.
It may take them a bit to adjust, to learn how to 'get by' without all the fancy stuff they have grown up with...but I think in the end...they will find out that it's a much easier existance overall...not having to 'consume' as much.
LOL..Life is much easier when you can just go out and 'pick ' a new toothbrush, off the tree, than it is to work for 8 hours at a job you hate, to be able to earn the $ to be able to buy that super-duper motorized toothbrush, and the special formula tooth paste to go with it!

People like you are why I shop at night, so you don't watch me pay for some food with a foodstamp card then check out how my kids are clothed and decide right there on the spot that I am thieving freeloader. Wow. Some people have nicer cars because they can't get out of the loan. They just changed the laws about cars like last year, so 15 years ago no one would be getting foodstamps who had a nice car.

I happen to hunt for bargains on ebay when it comes to buying my kids' clothes. That just makes me a smart shopper, not someone defrauding the welfare system. I didn't ask for help for many years even though I qualified, but my kids need good nutrition and unfortunately that is very expensive in this country. Junk food is cheap. Also, if someone is on foodstamps, hard working people, they should not even be allowed to relax on a Sat night with a six pack or a bottle of wine? Seems a bit harsh!

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I used to work at Bunton Seed....hope you are keeping your collections/ extra's in the fridge!
Seeds stored in the fridge, will last much longer than if they are kept room temp.
Some seeds will last 5-6 years or more, if kept nice and cool, dry.
I store mine in a plastic coffee can, with one of those 'dessicant' things that come in bottles of pills, use it to keep them becoming too moist in the cold fridge.
In Jan. I run my own 'germination test'.
I use a wet paper towel, and count out 10 seeds , wrap the seeds in the towel, and put them in a zip lock baggie, flat.
You can see how many of the seeds sprout, easily...see how heavily you need to plant, determined by how many seeds germinate... ;)
( LOL..I always end up planting the sprouts from the germination tests, I haven't the heart to just destroy them, even if it is too early)

To add: Make sure that the seeds you save are NOT from hybrid plants, as they are regressive in quality, for instance, a seedling hybrid tomato might give you fruit you would not want to eat.
Definition of non-hybrid plant = species, or plants that reproduce identically to the parent plant.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1110765

It is true, they can revert back.
Heirloom, open pollinated are the best to grow and save.
Most of the time when the plants revert backwards from the hybrid...they lose the hybrid parts, go back to their ancestors....so you lose what was 'desirable' about the hybrid, like plant hardiness against disease.
The food won't be in-edible, just won't have the hybrid qualities anymore...it will go back to the original plants it was made out of to get the Hybrid.
So, if 1 plant was introduced for flavor, and another for disease resistance, you may very well end up with a delicious veggie/fruit, but it will not have the disease resistance of the other parent plant....or vice versa...hardy as Hell plant, that dosen't produce the 'best flavor' .
I figure if it comes to a survival situation, people aren't going to care much about those kinds of things.
They will be happy with whatever they can grow, and eat, that will keep them alive.

i was at walmart today, and they had ZERO shampoo almost, just a small stash..i walked around and was like wtf, usually they have a whole isle with shampoos. Lucky im not that picky and just grabbed what was there.

they arrange stuff on the shevles to make them look fuller now
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1111907

It's all deliberate. Daughter worked for them until last month. Wider aisles, less product...there's a game going on where they kill off competing stores, then get us hooked on Great Values while being able to choose from a number of other brands, too. Then they take away all but one or two brands and the GV brand. It looks like a friggin' USDA surplus store in there now, what with their idiotic plain-jane GV wrappers.

We buy toiletries at Wal-Mart because they are cheaper, but we buy FOOD at the only competing store in the community. The competing store has a far better meat department and if you watch the sales, you can get two for the price of one. We're still eating protein, even in this shitty economy.

Veggie and fruit department is far better than Wal-Mart, too. It might cost me more at the start, but if things last longer and I don't have to throw out Wal-Mart lettuce because it's gone bad after only 2 days at home, I'm breaking even and/or saving.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Good thread OP. I am just getting started on page 2.

Where I live in the Northwest, the discount meat bin is almost always empty as well, starting about a year ago. Now you have to catch the butcher practically the moment he brings the stuff over. I notice the same selection of products here though and things are pretty well-stocked. Last fall we had a situation where produce was really hard to get for about a month. That was scary, to see the produce section so empty. Then there was a rice shortage scare a few years ago and the local Costco rice supply got cleaned out in short order. This thread reminded me to go get a 20 lb bag of rice from there. That lasts us about 4 months. When food panic ensues you see a side of humans you wish you hadn't.

Been a stay at home mom for years so had to be thrifty.Let me tell you the Escalades and Navigator moms are taking all my stuff from Goodwill and yard sales! The very same people who turned their noses up at me and my kids a few years ago are snatchin and grabbin at the thrift store sales like there is no tomorrow.I think they are worse off than we are cause they have such an expensive lifestyle to try and maintain.

I can't stand those little women in those huge Escalades and they are always wearing a visor and will never let you in front of them.

I know what you mean though. I've been a stay at home mom except for part time stuff anytime I could get it, and now I see those years of struggle as a blessing because our lifestyle really hasn't changed at all whereas for a lot of people who lived senselessly high on the hog, their fake wealthy evaporated and now they are having a very hard time lowering their standards.

Yeah alot of people are asking me now how I managed to stay home and when I tell them I haven't had a car payment with high insurance payments since 1985 they shut up cause they just aren't willing to give it up.

People are asses. If I ever have to drive my husband's '82 Toyota pickup (my dad's old truck, one owner!), people treat me like crap. It doesn't have power steering so it can take some time backing out of a parking spot. It's amazing how rude they are to me, but it's the price I pay to stay home with my kids. If someone wants to do that, they CAN. If we can do it on $12 an hour, a lot of those "how DO you do it" mothers can too.

My husband is like "if I saw a cute girl like you driving this truck, I would think "what a cool chick" but the reality is, people are total douches to me. They probably think, what is a girl looking like that driving THAT, what kind of LOSER must she be? It's terrible, good thing I am getting used to it and learning not to care. My kids will thank me someday.
