Something I noticed while at the grocery store...

It's alarming to hear that!
But, I can see truth in it, even though I rarely ever shop there.
I have noticed more and more people with the 'food stamp' cards these days.
Never used to see those around here in my area.....but they are showing up now.
I had to wait inline behind a woman using 1 of those just the other day.

I know I had a very telling conversation with a check out guy a couple of months back...was complaining about how crowded it was. He told me I picked the wrong day to shop...because it is the day of the month that Seniors get their checks, and come in to shop on the 'Senior Discount Days"
So, old people are having to try and save as much as possible too...having to wait to shop, until the day the check is posted to their accounts, and they are being targeted by the stores....like a mini competition to see who can 'get their first of the month money '.


Used to work in a grocery store in Northern Ohio about 15 years ago when in high school and the first of the month traffic back then was unbearable. Then I was disgusted to see the people who always had one full cart of food to purchase with their food stamps and another full cart of beer and other garbage that they of course had the cash to pay for but could not purchase with food stamps. Always had a couple of kids wearing expensive clothes and we had to help carry their stuff to their cars that were of course new and more expensive than what my parents could afford because they refused to ever live off the system.

I imagine today it is a different story and there are plenty of people who are really only surviving off the system. Just as was indicated by the story mentioned in the clip, the modern day bread lines are at the grocery stores at the first of the month. Generally best to avoid grocery stores and banks the first couple of days of month to avoid the hassle and the emotional drain of witnessing the real state of our country today both economically and socially.

Anyone notice this...

Tropicana OJ...was 64oz...now smaller
Ice cream used to sell in half-gallons...now 1 3/4 quarts
Yogurt... 8oz cups now 6oz
Tuna... 6oz cans now 5oz

AND THE PRICES ARE STILL HIGHER!

Go and check for yourself...DECEPTION IS RAMPANT and a majority of people SUCK AT MATH...so they'll never figure it out!

It's hard to believe that we're in a Depression.

It's certainly not evident when passing by the casino's, they are always FULL!

Funny you mention the Casino's...
I go there regularly with my Dad.
We go at least twice a month when he gets his checks.
I have noticed a huge differance in the Casio.
People do not 'win' like they used to, even just a couple of years ago.
The Casino dosen't give you near the amount of 'free money' that they used to, or free stuff for coming and playing, like they used to do.
Because people aren't winning like they used to, and the Casino has stopped giving away the free stuff....there are less people there than used to be.
We used to have to go at a crazy hour of day, like 3 a.m., to avoid the crowds of people.
Not anymore.
We can pick any hour of the day , any day of the week, and it is not crowded like it was before.

WHAT!?

No more "free drinks and never-ending buffets"....why would ANYONE go? You have to know the House is RIGGED, anyway.

A couple of times a week, I just go to the local super market, get a cart, and just walk around and make myself a sandwich or two.

Eat it in the store, and then leave.

But that's just me.

I appreciate your honesty.
Are you doing it because you don't have the money to pay for what you are eating, or do you just like to do that?

LOL..My ex could not walk into a Kroger, without walking around drinking a chocolate milk, that he never paid for.
He told me he did it, because he felt like the 'store owed him' that chocolate milk, because they were so expensive on everything else.

Thanks for the compliment OP. In the 70's my dad {single parent of two} was laid off and we lived on rice and lentils fresh garden veggies whole wheat bread .Never got a sniffle that year at all and it was one of the worst winters I can remember. So cheap can be healthy but I'm sure I wouldn't be popular with my kids !! LOL

Economy still seems okay in Arkansas for now. At least the high end restaurants are doing okay. I do buisness with them everyday.


I agree, we eat out at nice restaurants here a couple or times a week and the places are always busy.

everything is slowing down, EVERYTHING. it is happening over a long period of time, so people arent noticing so much except for the effects on their personal lives.
milk was 4.15 a gallon yesterday.
lots of strip malls sitting vacant as well, or nearly vacant.

from what i've seen regarding OPs story, 3 things.

1. that is absolutely the case, more and more i see it when i go shopping
2. it seems as though they are trying to dupe us into thinking that prices arent going up on everything. case in point: a loaf of bread that was 1.79 last week was "on sale" this week for 1.79, ten cents off the "normal price" of 1.89. which means next week that loaf of bread will be 1.89.
3. the average age of retail employees has probably gone up 15 years in the last 3.






hang on folks, this is just the beginning.

Who ever claims these people are not hurting also.. telling a lie.. every one is in a mess. except for those on welfare and the ones 0bama importing over here by the hundreds of thousands.

Look, the cashier told said she had a woman buy 300 bucks worth of groceries for 35 bucks -using specials, BOGO and coupons.

Lotteries and entertainment, something for hope.

i have noticed the recession is finally hit the more well off as well. many big business and corporations in this area now have shut down or layed of their whole crew.
it is a total lie that the country is coming out of it. it is worse and worse.

Here in Canada, I've noticed that grocery stores have stopped marking down the meat by 50%, now it's only a 30% discount. It's like they all got together and decided this. Strange.


Sounds like Loblaws/Superstore and their little pink stickers.

What irks me is those jerks at Sobeys would rather sell slightly older cakes, veggies, etc. for pig slop rather than marking things down so people don't get used to buying things at a discount.

Been a stay at home mom for years so had to be thrifty.Let me tell you the Escalades and Navigator moms are taking all my stuff from Goodwill and yard sales!The very same people who turned their noses up at me and my kids a few years ago are snatchin and grabbin at the thrift store sales like there is no tomorrow.I think they are worse off than we are cause they have such an expensive lifestyle to try and maintain.

Lots of good info OP. Wish my grandparents were still here! Love to pick their brain ! My grandmother never used a toothbrush, she used willow branches that were frayed at the end with baking "sodie" and some peroxide never went to the dentist had most of her teeth. The willow has same properties of aspirin.

I know people eating in stores happens even in good times, but its different now.....I see mothers feeding their kids while walking in the aisles.....I been seeing a woman that's feeding her toddler baby food...she looks tired, ashamed, and scared....not the same as having a chocolate milk.....

I can't stand those little women in those huge Escalades and they are always wearing a visor and will never let you in front of them.

I know what you mean though. I've been a stay at home mom except for part time stuff anytime I could get it, and now I see those years of struggle as a blessing because our lifestyle really hasn't changed at all whereas for a lot of people who lived senselessly high on the hog, their fake wealthy evaporated and now they are having a very hard time lowering their standards.

It's good to hear that it isn't 'widespread' yet...that means that there is still hope for some sort of 'comeback'.

Sounds like your neighborhood is living in denial. It's all about "appearances" and the reality is those "wealthy" neighbors will "keep up with the Jonses'" even if it means EATING the Jonses'!

I used to work at Bunton Seed....hope you are keeping your collections/ extra's in the fridge!
Seeds stored in the fridge, will last much longer than if they are kept room temp.
Some seeds will last 5-6 years or more, if kept nice and cool, dry.
I store mine in a plastic coffee can, with one of those 'dessicant' things that come in bottles of pills, use it to keep them becoming too moist in the cold fridge.
In Jan. I run my own 'germination test'.
I use a wet paper towel, and count out 10 seeds , wrap the seeds in the towel, and put them in a zip lock baggie, flat.
You can see how many of the seeds sprout, easily...see how heavily you need to plant, determined by how many seeds germinate... ;)
( LOL..I always end up planting the sprouts from the germination tests, I haven't the heart to just destroy them, even if it is too early)



To add: Make sure that the seeds you save are NOT from hybrid plants, as they are regressive in quality, for instance, a seedling hybrid tomato might give you fruit you would not want to eat.
Definition of non-hybrid plant = species, or plants that reproduce identically to the parent plant.

i was at walmart today, and they had ZERO shampoo almost, just a small stash..i walked around and was like wtf, usually they have a whole isle with shampoos. Lucky im not that picky and just grabbed what was there.

Yes, I have noticed a change in grocery shopping in the city where I live. Two women I have know that only shopped at the high end grocery stores I recently spotted at a box store that has the lowest prices in town. Of course they acted like they didn't see me. Very telling...
