The ' What are you reading? ' Thread!
Thought starting 2009 with a light hearted thread about whatever GLP'rs are reading.

Im going to update this thread as i see fit with anything im reading, or have just purchased for reading, its an interesting idea as if you find certain posters have a particular interest, you can check back later and look at the list of literature they post, hopefully giving people ideas about potential brain food and books they should check out.

Chowing my way through Jules Verne 20'000 Leagues Under the sea at the moment, old classic i have never read cover to cover, i bought about 50-100 books last year, my collection is turning into a small library.

So for me for 2009 its just.

Jules Verne - 20000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Dont think i have ever put a book down because i was bored with it, i have found some books to be a hard slog and have tried to follow the story only to be a little confused.

Last Exit to brooklyn by Hubert Selby Junior was one of those books, the prose is pretty difficult at times.

The Winter of Our Discontent-Steinbeck

Almost finished...Steinbeck is so good at getting emotion from short novels(see Of Mice and Men)

I just finished A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, and what a funny book...written in the 1960's, it explores so many taboo topics, especially for that day.

I've been on a Rex Stout binge! What fun.

I had read a "biography" of Sherlock Holmes, which made a case for Nero Wolfe being Sherlock Holmes' illegitimate son. The same guy who wrote the biography of Sherlock Holmes,
Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, wrote one about Nero Wolfe too!

The Nero Wolfe mystery novels are really delightful, such great characters with so many quirks! He's so abrasive, but is devoted to his 10,000 rare orchids. And Archie Goodwin is so sexy and always on the make.

Highly recommended.

Also the copies I have were part of a group that came from a person who had a ton of P.G. Wodehouse, so I thought that was a great recommendation as well.

Just finished THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy and I recommend it for anyone on this forum, especially doomers!!!

Also recently read A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN by James Joyce and found it incredibly illuminating. Once of the richest and most symbolic books I have read. I'm looking forward to reading more Joyce.

I just started ISHMAEL by Daniel Quinn and it has me pretty jazzed to keep reading!
