I love how authors will give you suggestions on what to read in the context of their novels..Like when I read " Catcher in the Rye", the character said Ring Lardner was his fav author, so I started reading Ring's stories, and one novel called Gullible's Travel's, annd they were good.

Deepak Chopra has written a lot on the medical and quantum connections. Well worth reading "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" as well as all the others.

Bruce Lipton on quantum physics.

Recommend any books that have bios, photographs, and context on Dorothea Lange and Mary Ellen Mark.

Reading about daguerrotypes (sp) and such is also very interesting.

The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas. Multiple narrative, contemporary Australian novel about the fallout after a man at a suburban barbeque slaps a child that is not his own.

A very refreshing antedote to doom.

You guys with the suggestions are awesome, certainly going to at least look them up, ill figure out if ill buy them for sure later on, i just have a pretty big list of other priorities at the moment however thats some useful information, thanks guys and keep it coming.

To the H.P Lovecraft guy, yeah it was just a 4 or 5 inch thick leather bound book with Lovecraft - Necronomicon wrote on it in gold lettering, all leather bound.

I think it was a collection of stories, i cant recall details, i bought a lot of other books that day.

I have several books on the go at any given time.
I happened upon Steinbeck's "of Mice and Men" in a thrift shop just last week and finished it today. Enjoyed it immensely.
I also just finished reading Jim Marr's "Fourth Reich". Also excellent.
I'm part way through the following:
Mat Stein's "When Technology Fails"
Joseph P. Farrell's "The Cosmic War" (a difficult read, but I will persist to the end)
Richard Hoagland's "Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA"
"The Journals of Lewis and Clark" can't recall author (this is an absolutely fascinating historical account -- what intrepid explorers)

Also the copies I have were part of a group that came from a person who had a ton of P.G. Wodehouse, so I thought that was a great recommendation as well.
 Quoting: mercury2

P. G. Wodehouse is hysterically funny! If you're unfamiliar with him start with the Jeeves and Wooster stories. Or see if you can locate a copy of Uncle Dynamite. You'll thank me later!

Oh, and I'm reading Steinbeck's 'East of Eden' for the fourth or fifth time. Much better than 'Grapes of Wrath', in my opinion. I also have Pinchbeck's '2012'. I make a habit of reading several books at once, so this'll be the start of my 2009.

To all short story lovers: check out Saki, especially 'The Unrest Cure' and 'Sredni Vashtar'. The man was brilliant, and the world has forgotten.

"Nagash the Sorceror" - A really good fantasy novel with an Egyptian theme and plenty of undead. Who can resist the undead?

"Perdido Street Station" - Hard to describe, it's sci-fi, well written and with a very original story. Highly recommended.

Rereading "Otherland" again too, Tad Williams, fantastic.

A couple of nights ago I read "Shadow over Innsmouth" and started Mountains of Madness which I will read tonight.

My son gave me 4 Lovecraft's books to read recently and told me that they would affect my dreams. Was he ever right. I started dreaming the weirdest dreams the same night I started reading them.

I have a question for all of you....If you start a book and find it to be dull and boring, will you finish it regardless or will you put it down and start a new one?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 565221

I take the approach that if I am attracted to a particular book in the first place, that I am somehow fated to read all of it. I have slogged my way through a number of books that didn't bowl me over, but there was always ultimately some value to the content. The only exception that comes to mind was Charlotte Bronte's "Shirley". That was like trying to get through jungle under/overgrowth without a machete. I just couldn't do it.

I was a big, strapping lad of 16 when I discovered Lovecraft in a musty flea market. I slept with the lights on for months afterward.
