That’s almost as insane as playing Russian roulette! In sanity we trust That's because it became over commercialized and people who aren't athletically prepared for the climb buy thier way in. Some people pay up to 500k to go up there with multiple back up sherpas, oxygen tanks, Glam camping set ups, you name it. It's cheating basically. Then their untrained bodies can't take it and they have some accident or collapse. During covid, I drove over the great divide on I-70 to fast and got VERY sick for over a week. Altitude sickness is no joke and some people can't tolerate it, so much so they can't live in places like Denver or high in the mountains, or even drive through the Great divide without consequences. Absolutely agree on the over commercialization aspect, but a lot of that money goes to the Sherpa communities so it is a good thing in a way. We live near rainier and I have a cousin who has done a north-south summit which is incredibly difficult since all base camps (paradise and muer center) are on the south end. I asked him once about Everest if he was interested and without pause he said he loves mountaineering, but he’s not suicidal. Always thought that was funny. “When you’re dead you’re dead, but you’re not quite so dead if you contribute something” -John Dunsworth |

When we were at Camp II, we heard about the Sherpa whose hands froze at Camp IV and died. Just going from Camp III to Camp IV, they were bringing two bodies down, then on the summit push, one clearly dead Chinese, one-half alive but missing a boot,” the climber told me. “When I got back to Camp IV, one new dead on the trail that couldn’t have been more than three hours old because he wasn’t there when my faster teammates made it back. My buddy shook the body and was clearly dead.” The climber said he expects more deaths to be announced in the coming days." Wow, these people pay hundreds of thousands to climb the mountain that could kill them. Crazy! |

I’ve gone from Dallas to Taos NM and tried to do Wheeler Peak (13,000 asl) on the next day. I almost made it, didn’t get sick. Even had several margaritas the night before. I was 41 or so and didn’t think much about the danger. Then I did the same for several years afterwards. Didn’t work out for me so well. Lots of nausea. Stomach cramps. Gotta drink lots of water. We stopped going a few years ago. In our 70s now so why bother. Still don’t see the fun in climbing that high in snow. I mean, it’s just snow. No wildlife and streams. That’s enjoyable. https://imgur.com/a/x4mmVaK Last Edited by Texas Best on 06/09/2023 10:25 AM ………… For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.….. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72643058 United States 06/09/2023 10:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 2 british climbers coming down from the 6,344-metre Siula Grande in south america and one of them falls and destroys his knee. it just gets crazy from there. there is a short section in the book of other tragedies and mishaps that are known among that community. one in particular was a small team (2-3 people) who were climbing up some massive face with ropes and gear. they reached a big ledge where they would spend the night. the ledge abutted the wall which had multiple bolts drilled into it so climbers could clip themselves and their gear to the wall for safety during the night. it was over 10,000 feet up, IIRC. anyway, these dudes only clipped their sleeping bags in and during the night the whole ledge just fell from the face, with all their gear. they woke up in the dark dangling from single bolts inside their sleeping bags. some hero in a helicopter was able to get close enough to the wall and rescue all of them the next day. "touching the void" was also made into a movie, which was excellent too. mountain climbers are nuts, IMO....and people with no business above 17,000 ft are just stupid. |

Everyone knows that the mountain is covered in dead bodies and used as landmarks. That stupid woman knew this, yet her self importance is such that she has to risk her life and those of tbe Sherpas so she can be "cool". |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69573331 Serbia 06/09/2023 10:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | One of the deadliest seasons on Everest. Too many people have no business being there. Too many of them pushing for the summit at the same time, making the "death zone" crowded. While you wait for your turn to go, you spend too much time above 8000 meters, basically dying while you wait. I understand it's big business, but anyone who pays gets a license to climb Everest, which is ridiculous. Some days ago, a 69-year-old Canadian doctor died there. Unbelievable. |
