After the Kessel was bulged out shit tons of supplies were lost to the Russians . The Coats and boots were never facilitated because the troops were not supposed to siege Moscow or Leningrad but take the Caucuses with the oil fields . The Assault on Leningrad went on further than planned . The Luftwaffe made the city a sniper's dream and the Wehrmacht were not trained in city tactics door to door . It was a disaster for the infantry 1/3 of the 6th Army literally FROZE in their dugouts and trenches . General Reichenau was suicided on the plane back to Germany just like Rommel was suicided . Hitler was obsessed with Stalingrad and insisted it be taken at what ever cost . So many Germans were killed in action the Romanians and Albanians were used to flank the 6th Army's Right and left Wings . This is were the Russians struck and broke through . Those Armies were destitute of supplies . You never hear about their plight . Utter destruction . Many of them went to the Russian side for food and warmth . Just the mere mention of being sent to the Eastern Front would send terror through a soldier . It was 80 % death in the 1st month . |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77374864 United States 03/27/2023 12:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hitler was so caught up in his physically small Eurocentric thinking (he had NEVER visisted the US or the USSR, shoot not even France or Great Britain) that he failed to grasp the basics of physical size, industrial capacity, and the population size of the countries he was trying to take over. In addition he clearly had NEVER read even Europe's History of Warfare. Example: Not as bad now .... but 40 to 50 years ago before plane rides were cheap and not many Europeans had made the trip to the US or Canada when an everyday European came to the US for a first visit they seemed to think LA was just down the road from NYC, one could get there in an easy day of driving. Ditto NYC to Miami. They thought Chicago maybe 1/2 day of driving from NYC. (acquaintance's uncle from the UK came for a first visit of his brother who lived in Toledo Ohio and called from JFK and asked him to come pick him up ... thinking it was about a 1.5 to 2 hour trip to the airport ... WHOOPS that was WRONG) Todays most Europeans understand the SIZE of the US, though they still underestimate the size of Russia ... but that INABILITY to understand geographical basics, even among elites, were very very common in Hitler's day and he fell into that trap. |

His personal doctor, Theodore Morell, was a quack Hitler trusted implicitly from the beginning. |

When over half of his army froze and starved to death while marching back to France he realized it. They see that prize of Moscow and think they'll just take it. They all think the same thing. And Russia kicks their butts every time. |

The Germans really only had real issues with the cold in the first winter, in 1941. They were all caught up with it by the second winter. It was the massive intelligence failure about the size of soviet army and tremendous capability of the soviet industry that really killed them. They went into Russia thinking the Red army is a tenth of it's size. Last Edited by News_hungry on 03/27/2023 12:25 PM |

The German Invasion of Russia " The Germans invaded Russia on June 22, the feast of all Saints of Russia. They were in general greeted with ecstatic joy. Thus Solzhenitsyn writes: "Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia gave the Germans a jubilant welcome. Belorussia, the Western Ukraine, and the first occupied Russian territories followed suit. But the mood of the people was demonstrated most graphically of all by the Red Army: before the eyes of the whole world it retreated along a 2,000-kilometre front, on foot, but every bit as fast as motorized units. Nothing could possibly be more convincing than the way these men, soldiers in their prime, voted with their feet. Numerical superiority was entirely with the Red Army, they had excellent artillery and a strong tank force, yet back they rolled, a rout without compare, unprecedented in the annals of Russian and world history. In the first few months some three million officers and men had fallen into enemy hands! " " "That is what the popular mood was like – the mood of peoples some of whom had lived through twenty-four years of communism and others but a single year. For them the whole point of this latest war was to cast off the scourge of communism. Naturally enough, each people was primarily bent not on resolving any European problem but on its own national task – liberation from communism…"[xiii] " Thread: Hitler and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia |

The Soviet Union was just too big, had too many people and too many resources for Germany to have any chance of winning a long war. Both the Axis and Allies expected the Soviet Union to crumble with Stalin assassinated or overthrown and whoever was in power giving Germany whatever they wanted. If Germany was still fighting during the winter they had lost.. and that's what happened. Stalin wasn't overthrown, the Soviets kept fighting and the depleted Wehrmacht wore down. Moscow was 1,000 miles from Berlin and the Germans were never able to adequately supply their troops at that distance. Winter clothing, ammunition, food, replacement troops and equipment were all shipped East but they simply couldn't get it all there. The distances were simply too far. Once Germany was defeated at the Battle of Moscow they had no chance of winning even though they were still in a dominant position. |

" Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79456704 An important factor is that in the first 6 months of Operation Barbarossa 2.7 Red Army POWs were killed. That is 2.7 million healthy soldiers who surrendered who were killed. This caused the Soviets to fight harder and their soldiers quickly understood that surrender probably meant death. And we aren't talking about all the civilians murdered or captured as slave labor, this is just soldiers. This is also one of the primary reasons the Germans feared the Soviets as the war turned against Germany. People knew atrocities had been committed and revenge was coming.
