What kind of tires ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85158116

I actually switched to quieter tires. It had BFGoodrich Mud Terrains. They were a quite a noisy tire.

I have the All-terrain KO's now the 33×12.50s.

I wish it was the tires. Hewring alot more noises now that idon't have mud tires rumbling at any speed above 30.

Driveshaft Center Support Bearing

Failing that, replace the Pinion bearings.
 Quoting: Housedad

Its a 2 door Tahoe. No center support bearing.

My trucks not long enough for that. But its not the size that counts, amirite?

since it hasnt been mentioned, check your motor/trans mounts too. ive had cars that had odd vibrations stop after changing the motor mounts.. the whole drive train can be out of alignment due to bad motor/trans mounts.

Not a bad idea at all. Thank you.

So, we get our health advice from GLP why not health advice of sorts for our vehicles.

My old buddy Diesel_Tech who I normally asked has either changed his name or is no longer here.

Ok, so here are the bullet points

1997 Tahoe Z71 2 door

Obviously has 4wd and all the offroad goodies offered by GM.

Now here is my problem.

Whine/hum that starts around 20 and stays constant under load. The hum/whine disappears when I let off the gas.

I feel a slight vibration in the gas pedal as well and it does seem to change pitch when I slalom the truck side to side at speed.

Now, I know most will say its my rear end pinion or carrier bearings. I thought this too and it still very well may be but I emptied the fluid and no shavings or glitter indicating a rear end about to grenade.

I changed the rear axle bearings and seals to rule them out and no avail.

Basically my symptoms are a blend of wheel bearing and rear end.

How the f--- do I pinpoint what it is? I can figure out how to repair just about anything on this truck but when symptoms match 2 or 3 possible problems....that's when things get a little iffy for me.

I really hope its a bearing and I'm not stuck rebuilding, shimming, and correcting backlash on a new rear end.

The rear end is RPO code GT4 which is the 30 spline 10-bolt with 3.73 gears and posi/locker

This is actually sound advice(no pun intended)

40 bux and a roll of duct tape sure beat having your friend hang out the window with a screwdriver in his ear.

best idea given in this thread, probably pinpoint it in an hour or two
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84277758

It was a fantastic idea and that is a hail mary.

I juat ordered a wireless automotive microphone kit that 4 little mics to mount under the car and a littoe black box to show which one is being set off the loudest.

bump

You're likely to find the left side carrier bearing has pitted and worn. They like to spin on the differential case. When this happens your backlash increases and puts the ring and pinion out of alignment resulting in the typical howl.

This noise can be influenced by swaying the truck side to side as your axle shafts bear the side loads directly on the carrier cross pin. So when you make left turns, the right axle is loading the left carrier bearing, and vise versa.

Pinion bearings can also make noise. The front one will start growling at parking lot speeds on up to road speed, and the rear one will have a deeper growl, usually more pronounced on acceleration and will all but disappear on coast.

Good buy on the chassis ears. You will find them very handy. thumbs

check the front diff. they're notorious for going bad. even without it being engaged they'll get noisey. get it up on jack stands all 4 wheels. fire it up, put it in gear and crawl under an listen.
