How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips

We went two weeks without power a few winters ago, so I blocked off my living room with heavy duty tarps, pitched our tent up and kept the fireplace stoked, we were actually sweating. The toilet seat was cold as F**K though.

Curtains and draperies, and storm doors.

If you have power use your oven to bake stuff.

Mix glass cleaner bleach and drano it produces much heat...just don't breathe.

Worth a try, it's cheap.

I've heated with wood for years.

My neighbor put in a propane stove that looks just like a wood stove, with cement decorative logs.

If you do install propane, make sure you buy your own tank so you can shop around for better deals on refills. Those propane companies that supply a tank will really rip you off!

The problem I have with wood is the bugs eating up my wood. I have to use up my stored wood within a couple of years otherwise it will turn into sawdust. It still works, but it has lost a lot of it's mass, and it burns up quickly.

I usually find having a hot woman in the bed helps a lot and if it's really cold, get your dogs on the bed too. Three dog night, anyone?

Buy an electric blanket, so when the power is on, you can air the bedding / mattress. Very cheap way to have somewhere warm and dry. Also clothes can be put under blankets to drive away cold and damp.

When power goes off, leave the blanket on (when not asleep) so when it comes back on, if only for few hours it will get to do it's magic. Better yet an electric over blanket can be used when sitting in a chair or on a bed. Cost less than a dollar a week in electricity.

Gas heat does not work without a fan running.

Pretty much covered everything but "turn on the heat".

None of that shit will help keep your house warm.

My wood stove keeps my 2000 sq ft home nice and toasty even when is sub zero.

Here is some clay pot heater info . Have lots of tea lites on hand .

Options

1) If you have gas central heating and the gas is still avaiable, just power the furnace with a generator.

2) During the Texas Freeze, I made due with an artifical gas log in the fireplace. Simple gas flame burning of course with the flue damper open.

3) There is a cheap Chinese Diesel heater that gives you clean heat. it has 2 small 12 volt fans and a 12 Volt fuel pump. Heat output is equivalent to 5kw. You just run the little exhaust pipe out a window. Also called a truck parking heater.
They cost around $100 .

4) I have a gas stove, so I alway had 2 burners on making hot water for coffee and instant soups.

5) I am not a fan of stoves that do not vent like Kerosuns or Big BUddy propane heaters, but a lot of people use the BIg Buddy propane heater without issues so I include it on the list.


6) The candle and the clay flowerpot thing is absurdly dumb. Like pissing in the ocean to raise the sea level. That's all I have to say about that.

No worry about cold toilet seat when the power goes out here, there is no water for the toilet with no power to the well pump.

Keep on hand two 5 gal buckets with lids. One for liquids and one garbage bag lined for solids. Wood chips, sawdust, cat litter or lime will help with the odor.

Buy some white 12v vehicle LED blinker lamps. They will not keep you warm, but will let you see what you are doing in the dark with the use of a vehicle battery, and will last a decent length of time without too much drain.

At least you'll be able to work during the dark - so keeping warm that way.

Don't have to worry about heat that much. :)

Personally I just wear a bunch of shirts and pants and then put four or five ponches on top of that if it's super cold.

Neighbors wanted to install a wood stove in their newly purchased house.

They were told they could not get insurance on the home with a wood stove unless they were within 5 miles of a fire department.

They were 6.2 miles from the fire department. No fireplace.
