Not on the list yet. Mylar, get a 100ft roll of mylar, emergency blanket material. You can use to tent sheet a room to keep it warm with body heat and what ever you use for emergency cooking and lighting. It is light weight, reflects a lot of light, goes up fast and easy with a staple gun, push pins, tape, can be hung on wires or string.

This is an important tip for people in rentals with strict limits on making any alterations.

It also works to keep animal spaces warmer during major power outage cold snaps.

I read somewhere....probably here, that putting a candle under a terracotta flower pot produces alot of heat.

You have to be careful because of the fire hazard, and to make sure the surface you put it on will not be damaged from the heat. There are some good y-tube vids on this.

The real issue is whether your wood stove installation voids your home insurance.
You better make sure you know what you're doing.

I think the OP is basically saying if the electricity goes OUT, as in maybe financial collapse, or EMP.

I'll strip the house down to stay alive. They can bill me in the spring.

Longjohn's won't save if if there is snow and ice outside, no heat, and it stays that way.

Block windows, sure, but again, if there is NO heat for a week, you better have some way to warm up, or live like and artic explorer.

The tent?
I have decently large 5-6 person tent. I also have a smaller tent that would probably fit inside that. I also have several large tarps that would cover either of them.

The slightly larger one is a costco one that blocks out sunlight, so I assume that is fairly heat insulated on it's own.

Camping in N Ontario, wasn't snow or winter, but nights were chilly. Sister in law had a tarp we threw over the large tent and it was pretty dam toasty in the morning due to body heat.

Have a way to cook, because a well fed bunch of bodies throws off a fair bit of heat.

Farmers’ Almanac Releases An Extreme Winter Forecast For 2022-23 - Farmers' Almanac releases its extended winter weather forecast. Get ready to shake, shiver, and shovel!

This winter will be epic and 5 months long.

[link to www.farmersalmanac.com (secure)]

"Lewiston, ME: Every year since 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac provides an extended weather forecast that helps people plan ahead. This year, with the extreme summer weather conditions broiling the country, and the growing concern over the rising costs of heating oil, Farmers’ Almanac is releasing its winter weather forecast earlier than ever. The 2023 Farmers’ Almanac, which hits the store shelves on August 15, is warning readers that this winter will be filled plenty of shaking, shivering, and shoveling.

How Cold?
Shivery temperatures are predicted to rattle warm weather seekers in the Southeast and South Central states, but the real shivers might send people in the Great Lakes areas, Northeast, and North Central regions hibernating. According to the Almanac, the North Central States are forecast to experience extremely cold temperatures, (possibly 40° below zero!) especially during mid-January.

Areas in the western half of the country should escape major shivers, with an overall forecast of brisk temperatures predicted in the Northwest and mild temperatures in the Southwest.

Shovel Worthy
The Farmers’ Almanac suggests a stormy winter in on schedule especially for the eastern half of the country. For some areas this may mean snow, but for others it will result in more slush and mush.

January 2023 looks to be the stormiest for many areas including Texas and Oklahoma, where heavy snow is predicted during the first week. Unfortunately, a dry winter is predicted for the Southwest states, which won’t help the drought situation."
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
I have been living at 7000 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains for 28 years. Have lost electrical power many times. I, too, have an earth stove to heat the house. Also have propane for the stove, furnace, and water heater. Just had my 250 gallon propane tank filled up in early September and propane was already $2.55/gallon. It is usually less than $2.00 gallon in September. So I expect it is going to go through the roof by December.

All of the above ideas are practical and good.
Just a few suggestions:

Go to the thrift store and get some blankets to put over the windows. Blinds are usually too light weight to block real cold coming through the panes of glass.

Get some cheap pathway solar lights to bring in at night for lighting. You can put them in a small box or flower pot filled with dirt to use in the house.

Get a Coleman camping stove (2 burner kind) and some propane bottles to use to cook food. Cheaper than using the kitchen stove. You can boil water on the earth stove, but it takes a while.

I have a lot of heavy throw rugs on my wooden floors as cold comes up from under the house.

Get your chimney cleaned! If your chimney is full of soot or cresot, your earth stove will not draft well.

Invest in some freeze dried food. All it takes is boiling water to prepare. Driving to the store in a snow storm is a really pain and the store maybe empty or closed.

Get some 5 gallon gas0line containers. I keep five filled with gasoline for emergencies. Put Stabil in the gas. It keeps the gasoline good for two years.

I also have a 65 gallon plastic water tank in the guest bathtub for extra water. You can get one for about $20.00 plus shipping. 65 one gallon bottles takes up a lot of room. If I lose electricity, I can't use my well or power the furnance. My gas stove just needs a match to light.

Don't forget anti-freeze for your car and windshield water.

Hope this helps.

Our mortgage company won’t let us put in a wood stove. So we bought a hot tent. If worse comes to worst, we’ll put it up in the backyard.

I do that too. It is not unusual to get -20 in winter. I have a hot plate for making hot beverages, cereals and soups in the warm smaller room. I hang a blanket near the bed to keep the radiator heat confined and hung blankets on the walls near the bed. I put weather stripping and a floor draft guard on the interior door to my designated warm room. I can keep my thermostat at 42 F, and my one room at 72, I have an elc ceramic heater for the bathroom I only turn on when in use.

This is a safe way to keep small children warmer, remember they are small and close to the floor all day, it is twice as cold for them on the floor than for you . Try to use an electric blanket on the floor for small children to play on. Get them slip on fuzzy warm winter boots for indoor slippers. Warm their hands and feet in warm water before bed and warm the bed with a heating pad or hot water bottle, or when they get cold with a nice hot cup of fruity herb tea.

I have calculated the cost of running several kinds of oil bath heaters over the years. They all average $50-60 a month to run 24 hrs a day on med high setting, (depending on how much your power company charges kw). Just make sure it is on it's own breaker without other major power drains, plugged into a good #12 outlet and check the cord and plug often for overheating.

It is cheaper to heat one room nice and warm than trying to heat the entire house to barley tolerable.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
Living in Northern Canada and dealing with power outages in the winter that can last a week or longer, I can say this.

Whether you have a wood furnace or stove, make sure you have a blower that can run on a battery or alternative energy source, or your heat will go out your pipe and wasted.

You should already by now (if you have a wood stove/furnace) have a years worth of dry seasoned wood. Slim pickings come winter to try and get some.

Lots of layers. Hot water bottles are a lovely way to keep your bed warm during the night and they last for about 4 hours.

Also, handy things are these tin bed warmers, you place your coals into the tin pan, and run it along your bed to warm it up. (look up old fashioned bed warmers).

Plastic sheeting or something to close off rooms that do not need to be heated. A lot of homes have a living room and a family room as an example. Which one is used more.

Battery operated fans are a great way to help circulate the warm air in areas of your home, especially if you are in a bungalow. With a two storey like our home, all the heat was roasting us in the family room (before the battery fans) and then escaping upstairs to the bedrooms.

Best tip is to just keep your house warm enough where you won't have to worry about your pipes freezing and layer up your clothing.

This is great.

Got a couple of solar hanging lanterns that can be used inside when dark.

Also purchased a variety of Bear Creek Soup mixes.. 8 cups of boiling hot water and you are good to go. Delicious, hot and filling.

A Jackery Power Station can also be used to power computer, cell phone and lights (Brightech Ambience Pro USB Powered String Lights - 24 Ft Commercial Grade Waterproof String Lights $25.99) [link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

Solar panels are available for the Jackery Power Station

Generator, battery packs (have used the Marine batteries in the past - now use the Jackery and some other power packs)

Aviation fuel is good forever.. This is available at the small local airport. We keep this on hand and also use it for the the lawn mower and other small engines.

Single burner camping stove works well too.

One can also make "warms". A 24" long sock/linen fabric like tube filled with flax seed, rice. Then cover with a flannel pillow case fit to size so it can be removed and laundered. Just put it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes and it heats up. Can be used around the neck, warm hands, as a foot warmer in bed, etc. In winter with the power - if one has a cast iron pot on the wood stove it can go in that to heat up. Just make sure it's sitting on a pyrex surface resting in the pot as a safety precaution.

One can also purchase warmies microwavable animals

Snow studded tires go on all the vehicles at the end of October as it almost always snows on Halloween.

In addition with keep an emergency winter pack in the vehicles. Fleece blankets, flash light, candle in a can, lighter, power bars, Gorp, cocoa packets, metal cups, mylar blanket, hand warmers, emergency light glow stick, extra heavy coat, gloves, knit hat, etc. for those times when the car plows into a steep snow bank in the dark at 5 am on the way to work.. which happened to both vehicles following a snow storm and they were stuck there for a few hours. The second vehicle, a 4-wheel drive truck that went to rescue the car also got stuck. Not fun.

CA governor Newsom said they plan to ban the sale of gas stoves, heaters and water heaters by 2030, and this is after announcing the ban on the sale of gas automobiles. This is NOT about the environment. It is about gaining TOTAL CONTROL. Forcing everyone to go electric gives tyrants the ability to flip the switch to force compliance. Tyrannical rule is coming (Revelation chapter 13). P.S. They have already lost.

In america, the history states ben franklin attached an iron key to a "kite" and raised it into the skies and discovered electricity.
