Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
I'm asking because I am over 50 and had never done it. In the last year I have been having excess wax issues. I'd get dizzy rolling over in the bed.

Anyway after a year or so my right ear got worse and I went to a walk in clinic.

Long story short they got my right ear washed out but while flushing my left ear they hit my eardrum I think. It hurt so bad I was crying. Still crying after I left.

They said my left ear was now "impacted" and I should use an ear wax softener for 5 nights and come back for ear flush.

I have been hesitant to let them near my ear again. I have a constant ringing in that ear. I think they f'd my ear up!I

Any suggestions?

P.S. I did the candle thing twice! Once each ear. Looking forward to other's experiences with those candle things!!

I have used them and found them to be effective, but it seems that if your ear is impacted, it may hurt. They get very warm. The gurgling and drawing sensation is odd, but I prefer them to a doctor's appointment.

Ear candles are a bunch of hooey

Just get the ear cleaning kit

Couple drops of oil everyday for 3 or 5 days

Then a warm water flush with the squirt bulb

You might see stuff come out of your ears you wouldnt believe

Re: Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
I tried them and found them to be a scam. If you have a hot water bottle or one of those grain-filled bean bags you can microwave and keep something warm against your ear and neck, that helps wax drain much better and much safer. Another alternative is to use a blow dryer on high at a safe distance to warm your ear/neck and then do some slow head circles to help the jaw/ear area loosen up. Q-tips are still the best, just be careful and go slow

I used them for a couple of years ... enjoyed the sensation the warmth the crackling fire sounds ... but I never had a wax problem to begin with - so I just stopped doing it

also tried those detox patches in the arch of your feet ... don't know if they detoxed me ... but I enjoyed the experience

Re: Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
I've tried them and it seems the ingredients used to make them are different; the cheap ones don't work like the more costly ones.

The stuff that came out of my ears with the good ones looked like burnt cheese on a pizza.

I don't like the idea of putting weird oils in my ears.

There are youtubes where people put hydrogen peroxide in their ears (that sounds scary to me).

And then there are the things that squirt (warm) water into your ear. I had 1 of those and it worked somewhat but made my ear hurt sometimes.

Now I just do like some have posted on glp, let the warm water shower go in & then tilt your head to make sure it all comes out. I like this method the best. Simple, easy & almost free.

I use a large bobbie pin because it looks like the same instrument doctors use. Usually get something. Feels good.

They seem to work ok...but I just finally went with the warm water solution and bulb kit. It’s kinda freaky if you’ve never regularly cleaned your ears...after a couple weeks, your like...”Damn I can hear really well!”

Re: Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
I am an LMT and worked for an Ayurvedic Acupuncturist for 2 years.
We performed candle wax on many clients/patients all the time.

For some it didn't do much other than remove wax, we had a few where their tinnitus got better.

The other massage therapists would do it on me when there was too much wax. As far as wax, it will remove it.

Sometimes it's dry wax, other time it's more oily and sticky.

we were told by the Doctor that even the texture of the wax had something to do with what's happening to the body.

It's Ayurvedic medicine very old from India and I never studied it so I don't know what the texture means.

Re: Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
Oil and/or hydrogen peroxide. The HP sizzles the wax. It's an amazing sensation. One of mine got completely clogged one time, nearly deaf in one ear. It throws everything off (including balance) and is extremely uncomfortable.

Had to go to the doctor and they used a tiny vacuum tube to suction it out. It's amazing how much accumulates.

They key is to keep on it if you have a problem. If you try to clean them out when they're clogged it may be too late.

Re: Have any of y'all used an ear candle to remove wax?
I used them for years, liked the warm sensation as others mentioned, really felt mellow afterwards...

however...

one day I decided to burn one, but not in my ear. I just put it on the tip of my finger to form a vacuum like it would be if in my ear...

and the same "stuff" appeared at the bottom of the candle which I previously thought was ear wax and dry flaky residue

...brownish waxy pellets and substance, and a white flaky substance. I thought this was the stuff coming out of my ear.

INSTEAD IT WAS JUST THE CANDLE BURNING DOWN.

I did that too - burnt an ear candle - just put it in a glass.

But it did not get the big gobs of "burnt pizza cheese" like what came out of the candles in my ears.
Just some powder.

So in my honest opinion they work.
The good ones anyway.

I couldn't believe how much wax it sucked out.

I couldn't imagine how much room was in my ear.

I should do it again soon.

It's painless and no trouble, but it does make a weird sound, it's warm, and it is like you can feel the sucking.

THIS ... or a flush in a Doctor's office.

If the wax is "impacted" it DOES need to be flushed out.

I used to have very very heavy wax build up (don't now) and BOY the amount of wax that came out when the Doctor did a flush was unbelievable. Had to have it done about every 6 months for a few years.

Good luck!!

Hydrogen peroxide and an hour of laying on your side. Repeat 4 or 5 times, when it stops bubbling tilt your head into a tissue. Keep at it. You'll have relied.

Recently did both my ears, but then one ear got some Hydrogen peroxide, mostly water by then stuck. So I squirted some rubbing alcohol and I instantly felt better.
