I had a Cobra 29LTD with uppers and lowers, Roger beep, reverb, and a 150 watt linear. My base station rig was an old cobra that had been peaked to 8 watts. It wasn't much, but my antenna was 49 feet up and I lived on a hill. That damn thing could talk 55 miles on a clean day. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 79293947 United States 05/27/2022 11:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.radio4all.org (secure)] How to Use SSB on a CB Radio? Comprehensive Guideline CB Radios are used as communication devices where two people can talk to each other via a private channel. People generally use a CB radio when all the other modes of communication are cut off. Think of an apocalypse. Will you be able to use SNS to call up your loved ones? Chances are small (Or at least that is what the movies have been teaching us). Since 1948, CB radios have upgraded themselves into better devices with greater range. These days, CB radios should be able to cover at least a 5 miles area. Some even go as high as 10 miles. The radios come in 2 different modes: AM and SSB, which also stands for Single Side Band. As the title suggests, we will focus on how to use SSB mode on a CB radio. Read on to find out in detail. [link to cbworldinformer.com (secure)] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 83449517 05/27/2022 11:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do Not Skimp On the antenna. It is everything. And do get your radio tuned up. A good technician can get 8 or 9 watts out of a good radio. Alternatively, if you want to run a linear it is good to output 3 or 4 watts from the radio. By law you can't run more than 5 watts, but I never heard of anybody getting in trouble. I do know that with a big linear you can shut down everything around you. I could sit in front of a gas station, key up with 150 watts, and watch the tv in the store go to static. |

You can use repeaters in your area to talk 50+ miles. CB's are on the way out due to low wattage, short range. And like others here have posted, don't go cheep on the antenna. |

User ID: 82820050 United States 05/28/2022 06:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I just put in a brand new Uniden 78 CB radio into my 4 wheeler. The antenna is a 3 foot Firestick. I like whip antennas and I may switch it out in the future. I could have put in my FT-2800 (2 meters) or my MTX-115 (.70 cm GMRS). Why classic CB? Because that is where the action is around here. Lots of radio traffic. I do not peak and tune my radio. If I want to power up, I would simply put on an 10/11/12 meter amp. Don't need it 80%+ of the time as 4 or 5 miles talk is plenty good. Another reason classic CB is attractive is because equipment is plentiful and cheap (cost not so much quality). The units have a much lower learning curve with just station to station. No license required. About those export 10 meter radios. They will give you power but making them go from 10 meters into both 11 meters and 12 meters is a big spectrum. They work well (for the money) but the Harmonics WILL change after conversion. |

Much better than CB. **** Fixed it for you. They are not HAM as it ends at 450 Mhz. But only one portion of the HAM bands, UHF. The FCC took what was traditionally a Business Band channel and created a second Citizen Band. Like Business or Ham, you get a little more legal power plus the use of repeaters. You must get a low cost license and ID yourself- just like classic CB had to do before 1980. I do not understand why more people are not getting into this as it is great for families. It also matches up with the FRS (Family Radio Service) radio units. |

Equipment further away from the pulse will be protected by default- like behind a building or an embankment. I think a lot of cars will make it as well. I do keep some comm devices in a Metal .50 cal can. Better to be safe. Keeping batteries charged will be a bigger headache. We will see. That'll get me 25 miles easy. (and I have the 12v power cable for it.) Not gonna run out to see the rig that I have stashed in the car, it's got a mag mount antenna. And there's two CB radios in my EMP attenuation box (cause it's not a true Faraday cage). Combined with my other radios I hope to be an asset in hard times. Not officially part of AmRRoN but I'll participate in their CH3 effort should it come to that. "Yes, yes. Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. For me, it has been struggling to get a quality ground plane. Everything is plastic! I need metal!!!! The best unit for a classic CB full function radio is the Galaxy 959 with the FCC stamp on it. The new FM is overrated. I do not understand why they did not give more power (like 8 watts) if they allowed this change. Oh, well. Nothing wrong with basic, simple AM transmissions either. |
