Last solar cycle(2012) I talked to a dozen States from my Honda with a Wilson 1000 and a 125watt "box" with that radio after digging it out of my parent's basement. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72497887 I also have a Realistic(Made in Philippines by Uniden for Radio Shack) TRC-465 SSB radio, and a couple regular AM CB radios. Nice.. I was looking at the RM Italy Linear 203 kp for extra power. They are getting good write ups [link to www.rmitaly.com (secure)] |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 79293947 United States 05/28/2022 09:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back before cell phones were a thing CB radios had quite the following. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83449517 I had a Cobra 29LTD with uppers and lowers, Roger beep, reverb, and a 150 watt linear. My base station rig was an old cobra that had been peaked to 8 watts. It wasn't much, but my antenna was 49 feet up and I lived on a hill. That damn thing could talk 55 miles on a clean day. that's what I am talking about My dad had a CB on the boat and in the truck. It was great listening to the truckers at night. I have some property in the middle of nowhere, miles from the closest town. CB with tall antenna might be what I need. am out in the middle of nowhere too, a good base CB setup will be key when they shut it all down. |

I bought it a decade ago and it still works fine. I also have a RM Italy 40-50 watt that I bought because it has a low draw and it can run on the cigarette lighter. I used heavy-duty rubber bands to attach it to the top of my Realistic radio for my girlfriend's car as she does not want a radio wired in. I run a smaller Lil Wilson antenna with that setup, and it can be moved from one vehicle to another in 3 minutes. For the record my Lil Wilson gets half the range of my Wilson 1000. I have heard bad things as of late about Wilson as they were bought out and moved production to China. |

And do get your radio tuned up. A good technician can get 8 or 9 watts out of a good radio. Alternatively, if you want to run a linear it is good to output 3 or 4 watts from the radio. By law you can't run more than 5 watts, but I never heard of anybody getting in trouble. I do know that with a big linear you can shut down everything around you. I could sit in front of a gas station, key up with 150 watts, and watch the tv in the store go to static. And watch heart patient’s pacemakers malfunction. Brilliant. |

Just picked up a Johnny III with weather, I also have a 10 meter with cb and ssb .. get a Wilson the little will antenna with a decent radio and your good. Also a hand held is nice. Getting closer to..go time. Ok, but what good will it do me to communicate with Hank, Buford, Beauregard, Porkchop, Rubber Duck, Bandit, and Cooter? |

You would tune an AM/FM radio to a local station and use that as a modulation source with your voice. at the receiving end you used a demodulator with the same station... voila! Ominous regressions One Truth... many realities |

I have talked all over the world on 5 watts of power. Besides we are in the beginning of Solar Cycle 25. Communications will be wide open on the HF bands. I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already! Keep your 72 virgins, give me one old biker chick. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82248180 United States 05/28/2022 11:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | GMRS is the way to go. Quoting: RtMichigan $35 for a licence, 45 watt mobil radio will transmit 30 miles depending on terrain. You can use repeaters in your area to talk 50+ miles. CB's are on the way out due to low wattage, short range. And like others here have posted, don't go cheep on the antenna. For talking just to family, and within a few miles, the higher powered GMRS with a GOOD antenna system is the way to go. Clear stable talk with no static. With good antennas they are good for 10-20 miles, but will NOT talk over a mountain (ie one valley to the floor of the valley on the other side of the mountain unless there is a repeater on the mountain, the signals do NOT bend well) For talking to others over a decent distance the SSB CB's with a good antenna system are the way to go. Solid 10 miles, 20 across open terrain, and if you are on a hill with a directional antenna 40 miles is easy. Personally prefer the GMRS radios but do have a couple of SSB CB's that work fine, personally if talking to a specific person I don't like the static and lots of people around so use the GMRS |
