New Zealand sailing legend Sir Russell Coutts has confirmed he will attend the anti-mandate protest at Parliament next week.

In a post on social media, the Olympic gold medallist and five-time America's Cup winner said he is vaccinated, but against vaccine mandates.

“I'm also strongly opposed to the ever-increasing erosion of our human rights and the growing limitations on our freedom of choice,” he said.

He called the Government’s Covid-19 rules “irrational”. It’s not the first time Coutts has expressed similar views, accusing the Government of ‘dictatorship’ over Covid-19 restrictions last year.

It is how the protest at Ihumtao was conducted, successfully, as you may recall. It is how the local Maori made their demands known at Moutoa Gardens in Wanganui for almost three months. The occupation of Bastion Point lasted for 18 months.

What the prime minister meant, I suspect, is it isn’t how she and her cohort of performance revolutionaries choose to conduct themselves, where the object was to get the Instagram photo and move on somewhere comfortable for a soy latte and vegan muffin. Getting mud on your designer clothing was to be avoided and being arrested was definitely not on the cards. Thank you very much.

It makes sense that Trevor Mallard put on the sprinklers and played bad music at the crowd, because such a strategy would have deterred him and his parliamentary colleagues. Demonstrations were to be done only in fine weather and during gentlemen’s hours.

The problem is that those on the lawn are serious. They do not want to go home. They want things to change. It is possible that while they are not seeking a confrontation they are willing to absorb one, knowing that the prospect of images of bloodied faces and mass arrests might be enough to get the Beehive to back down.

Sadly this is probably true.

Most got vaccinated in quick succession but only 50% have been boostered and there is hope for those that have refused the booster.
