Wellington mayor Andy Foster said he was speaking regularly with police and Government at the highest level over the “unprecedented occupation” [by protesters], and had spent most of Saturday morning in discussions related to the protest.

“Obviously, our powers and resources are very limited and not remotely capable of even scratching the surface of something of this scale,” Foster said.

“We have never seen anything like this, ever, on that scale.”

About 5000 Wellington law and business scholars and up to 400 staff will be displaced until April, with Victoria University closing the Pipitea campus until the mid-semester break.

Tasman District councilor Dean McNamara said he had joined the protest in Wellington – his first – because the vaccine mandates had affected his family.

McNamara himself lost a part-time job, his wife had lost her full-time job, one daughter could not continue her teaching training degree while the other daughter could not sit her full driver's license, he said.

He added that while people were told it was their choice whether to get the Covid-19 vaccine, “if you don't take it, you're a second-class citizen".

"You can't work, you can't eat in restaurants. How's that a choice? It's not a choice”.

A Stuff journalist at the Wellington protest said there were "easily 1000 people in Parliament grounds", with hundreds more on surrounding streets and footpaths.

Bradley Cranston arrived late last night from up north to “fight for democracy”, and was spending the morning pitching his tent outside Bowen House.

A policeman can be seen taking photos. Another unmasked policeman was seen at the protest hugging protesters without a mask on.

Hollow – warnings that police would start towing vehicles from the streets around Parliament have not happened.

Instead, the number of protesters’ vehicles nearly doubled over two days, from 450 on Wednesday to 800 by yesterday.

“In the current circumstances, enforcement action taken by police runs the real risk of injury to the public, escalation in numbers of people, and a transition away from a largely peaceful protest to violence,” Coster said at a press conference yesterday.

“We continue to carefully navigate our options to reopen the roads, but the most desirable way to end this safely is to encourage open communication channels."
