Do ya think I'm made of money?....shrug

Seriously, that's way too much to spend for me.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

You didn't give a budget range so it's difficult to know what to recommend.

For what it's worth, the $170 to open it up doesn't sound outrageous.

Also, it doesn't sound like a hardware problem. Usually, it's some kind of malware or bloatware that causes it to auto restart.
 Quoting: 75598709

Okay....good information, although I've never heard of bloatware. Heh, that doesn't sound good.

I have CCleaner open and I'm looking at it wondering if I should pay the $20 for the upgraded version....it says it cleans places other cleaners don't....but I dunno.

It'd definitely be worth the $20, if I knew it would work, ya know?

If it's only restarting when I'm on Hulu, what are the chances it's a problem with a drive, that a drive might need to be upgraded?....someone had mentioned to me that could be the problem.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

Nobody can guess what's causing the problem. That's why it costs so much to open it up.

Do you have the problem on other streaming websites (ie. Netflix, Amazon)? If so, it could be the unit overheating.

I usually make a recovery disk and reset my computers to factory settings when I run into those kinds of problems. However, I would NOT recommend that for you if you don't know how to do it.

Maybe you can try finding an online forum for computer repair and post your questions. You would at least be able to get opinions on the various "cleaners" out there.
 Quoting: 75598709

I don't watch Netflix anymore....but I can't remember whether or not it happened when on Prime, I haven't had Prime for about two months....but I'm thinking I would remember if it did, because it's irritating.

I have reset a laptop before. It's not my favorite thing to do.

Have you tried CCleaner? It's free, so is Malware. I would run those first, and maybe Spyware.

More than likely it was an ad that was bluffing stating you are compromised in order to sell their "Security" services, I would not get rid of a good computer because of that.

Worst case scenario, just take to a local tech/computer guy to clean up any Malware etc., getting new computer is not necessary.
 Quoting: Keilani

No, I haven't tried them yet....I have virus protection and a firewall on here already, but I can try these others.

As far as going to a tech guy, it burns my craw he want's $170 for only what little he's going to do.

I don't need some massive laptop, at all. I just need one for personal use to take care of my research and learning, to come onto GLP, to watch Hulu and the video platforms, and to write my short stories on. I'm not a gamer or anything.

Mostly, I need one that isn't going to arbitrarily restart itself throughout the day....while watching Hulu.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

These are hard times. If you have the $170 pay it with a smile. He will appreciate it.

Good recommendation. In addition to CCleaner, also get Advanced SystemCare by IObit. It has a cleaner too, and I run CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare's cleaning in tandem, as one finds stuff the other does not. Together they are great.... and both are free.

I bought 3 used / reconditioned HP ELitebooks for around $100 each. These machines are really good and do anything you can think of.

One was loaded with malware, and I downloaded an unbelievably awesome program from Major Geeks.
You let it restart you into safe mode, then it checks... EVERYTHING. and FIXES EVERYTHING.

You just let it run and do its thing. takes about a half hour, maybe a little less.
There are lots of options. Just do the backup, then go to Fixes and accept the default combination fixup.

And it is free.

Tweaking.com

They even have a video showing you the step by step details.
I guess one of the Geeks made the Video, not the program author.

The CCleaner's health check said my laptop was unhappy and they they'd do some patch work.....lol, how sweet.

There were 1,165 MB of junk removed, and 12,621 trackers removed....I don't even know what trackers are.

Is all that bad? Could those two things be making it overheat?

It also says there is one start up app that needs to be disabled, but that only happens if I pay the $20....but I also just got a notice that says there's a 14 day free trial on the upgrade. I could do that.

12,000 trackers is a crazy big number. Let it clean them up.

Perhaps if I get my Stim pay this Wednesday. I've read they're going to release the pay to those on SS on the 7th....but whoever knows with the fuckery that goes on with the IRS.

Pish, it's just that I dropped my old ACER and it messed up the hard drive. A new one was needed. The machine was assessed, opened up, blown out, completely cleaned up, a new hard drive was put in, checked for viruses, all for $160 all together. That computer tech business is no longer in business, dang it.

And this guy wants $170 just to open it up, blow it out, and tell me what's wrong with it, with a further charge to fix whatever the problem is....and I don't have a clue how much those charges might be.

So yeah, I'm having a problem going to this guy.

You are going to have to pay money to keep your
computes running.
There's lots of Techies out there who can work remotely
on your computers for $100.
Or you can buy a 1 year service Subscription with
someone like Mcafee for $110.00 and they will
work on your computer as much as is needed (remotely) for
a whole year.
I do the Mcafee "Techmate" subscription and it works
great.
sometimes they have to work on it for 2 or 3 hrs.
so ask them if they are going to need you to sit
and watch the whole thing, or what you might need
to do for a session.

erase and reinstall the software and make sure they
check for residual malware in the....

anyway. you've got a lot to learn. so get some money
and start buying some help.

go to repair guy, while your at it if you dont have an SSD get one, very cheap and add more RAM. i personally dont care for linux mint as it bare bones, minimalistic UI. id go with Ubuntu 20.x. if you only use it for web and email. ditch Microsoft

and quite frankly you should try to install it yourself.

download ISO from desktop ubuntu
download Rufus util to burn ISO
plug in USB stick, tell rufus where the ISO is
reboot laptop, tell it to boot off USB stick in bios, usually F2 or DEL key
install ubuntu, extremly simple, just keep in mind it may wipe yuor HD of all data. it worth a try what have you got to loose?

It's a pain in the arse to reset a computer, but I suppose if I could get back to perfect working shape, then I would do that.

At least I could then wait until computer website Black Friday deals the end of this year, which is what I had been planning to do.

If I open this thing up myself, am I going to be able to get it back together? Are there all kinds of wires in there?

you can open it up. laptops are pretty simple in side. everything has its spot and its going to be locked in there. hp's are usually snapped together. use a credit card to slide in the crack once you can fit it in there. some models will have screws. i like dells because they come apart super easy.

if you have malware running it will cause more heat.

i use a few dell laptops i got years ago for about $100 a piece. linux mint is a simple install. super streamlined. very very similar to older windows products. and mac like reliability and virus free operation. for free.

If I open this thing up myself, am I going to be able to get it back together? Are there all kinds of wires in there?

We'll get working on it tomorrow if you'd like me to help you with it.

Well, I'm not ready to reset it. I'll try everything else before that....but of course, I can call you tomorrow.

Re: A question about changing laptops, if you wouldn't mind coming on in....lol, UPDATED
Was having problems with an older HP also and recently got an ACER Aspire 5 (i think..its at home an i'm not atm). I am a nontech person but easily added more RAM and a nice SSD. Having a clean new OS once again is nice.

Edited for spelling
 Quoting: Delcerro

That's the machine I'm looking at to buy....it's funny, because I read a review wherein the person was saying they added a 1T drive, $50, and an 8 gig RAM stick, and it had this $400 machine running like a $700 machine.

The only thing is it doesn't have a touch screen, but I hardly use mine anyway, so not a great loss.

But I really don't require anything fancy or pricey, for sure.

Neither did I. Thats the reason for the Aspire. Adding the RAM and SSD was easy, I just had to be quite careful and follow the instructions (a utube video that a guy made and did the upgrades to the Aspire 5, just put in "adding RAM to an ACER ASPIRE 5" in the utube search bar and it comes up. The guy is jasetutorials...very clear and concise).

BTW...virus protection is important. I have used a few...trying Nort*n on the laptop but i have K*spersky on multiple devices and am happy...costs $ tho

Also..utube is your friend when making specific upgrades :-)

another thing. i have had to deal with heat problems with my computer and some other peoples. I split them cleaned them but had to do reloads. and on the step sons desktop i had to under clock it to get the heat in a good range with win 10. which shouldn't be a problem because that rig has 4x the stats of my cheapo laptops. may be a manufacturer spread virus to encourage new sales.

Don't buy any pc that that doesn't run off SSD and don't buy any that use optane configurations. The optane will fail and the hdd link will cause you to lose data.

If any pc had windows 10 activated on it you can download windows media creation tool on any other working pc and make an installable usb flash drive for reinstalling clean win 10. It will activate like you own windows 10 for life even swapping components. Keep in mind that any systems that came optane loaded need to be configured in bios not to use it. Any used laptop sourced between 2018 and 2021 has a chance of needing that little operation to perform properly.

Malwarebytes bought ADWcleaner which is an amazing removal tool that can get things that actually get around paid Malwarebytes and other AV programs.

If you are recieving any popup about ip infection its bullshit. You need to have any browser installed loaded with a pop up blocker extension like Ublock Origin or adblock plus. Win 10 still includes ie11 which can also be used to display fake shit. Stuff can still get around pop up blockers but not for long. Back your stuff up on free 15gb google drive accounts and the most used stuff perhaps on a free one drive 5gb account. And an ip address is just like your house address except that it changes over time. It can't be hacked it can only be known or unknown.

Last note... Ram randomly goes bad. Especially ddr3 and above. Swapping may make a big difference in an old pc but using win 10 on anything thats not at least 5th gen hardware gets sketchy anyway. And a lot of problems are caused by failing batteries or windows not registering them properly in the middle of finishing updates. Whether internal or external they can be disconnected and ran off ac without issue.
