More than likely it was an ad that was bluffing stating you are compromised in order to sell their "Security" services, I would not get rid of a good computer because of that. Worst case scenario, just take to a local tech/computer guy to clean up any Malware etc., getting new computer is not necessary. |

Then do a factory reset, most HP's have a partition on the HDD that will reset it to factory. After that go to add and remove programs and remove everything that you can including all the antivirus crap. It will not let you remove any program that is needed to run You will be surprised how good your old laptop is. I would do it all for $50 including taking the bottom cover off and cleaning the dust out, if you were around me. Anyone charging more than $100 is ripping you off. If it does not have the recovery partition I would clean the Operating system out as much as possible or if you trust shipping it to me I will do it for $50 you pay shipping both ways. Uh, remove and reinstall hulu? Or Roku. Well, there's a thought.... I did just find this about laptops restarting themselves-- Dust Problems and Overheating Laptops do not intake as much air as desktops, but it's enough to bring in dust and debris to cause problems. Dust and debris can restrict airflow and cause the computer to engage an automatic shutdown if the system gets too hot. The laptop should shut down if it overheats, but the device could be set to restart if it gets too hot. System fan failure and restricted airflow can cause the system to overheat. Blast dust out of the laptop's vents with compressed air to improve airflow. In addition to restricting airflow, dust and debris can interfere with component connections. Try blasting out the ventilation port and device connection ports to remove interfering dust. Advanced users can try removing the RAM and hard drive to get at the related connectors and clean them with compressed air. [link to smallbusiness.chron.com (secure)] So, my next question becomes, does Hulu somehow need more "power" than other sites, and because of the dust in there, it's overheating while on Hulu? Because if this is because of too much dust in there, then that's a kind of easy fix....a scary fix for me to perform, for sure. I'm afraid I'll touch something the wrong way or I won't be able to get it all put back together right, and then it's down for the count. But there is also the whole problem of being hacked six months or so ago, so....yeah. You never change things by fighting the existing reality. Nobody can guess what's causing the problem. That's why it costs so much to open it up. Do you have the problem on other streaming websites (ie. Netflix, Amazon)? If so, it could be the unit overheating. I usually make a recovery disk and reset my computers to factory settings when I run into those kinds of problems. However, I would NOT recommend that for you if you don't know how to do it. Maybe you can try finding an online forum for computer repair and post your questions. Back up any docs and data from your old machine to and external hard drive. Set your new laptop up with a different password than you’ve ever used before and install antivirus on it. I’m a fan of E-Set but YMMV. Install any applications you need on the new laptop. Connect the external hard drive into the new laptop and run a virus scan against the data on the external hard drive. Selectively copy data that you want back on to the new machine. JMHO. Pervnoff |
