If the top part of the road and the Police and Fire Stations are undermined...it’s going to be a VERY long time. Plus, our worst floods and rain are usually in April. Going to get worse before it gets better.

On the upside, we actually like being cut off from the rest of this crazy world and no tourists. They are already trying to coordinate evacuation for them.

It looks like there is a road of some sort on the other side of the stream. Shouldn't that provide a way around the slide?

LOTS of dirt to be moved if they want to open the road that the slide ran across. Could take a while ... and then they have to be worried about the stability of the remaining dirt CLIFF that is going to be above the road.

It’s pretty cool living at the end of the road, in the most isolated community on the most remote island of the most remote island chain on earth.

More serious flooding Islandwide today. Tourists have already been evacuated from the cut off area. Sending in buses to evacuate the homeless from 2 beach parks that are flooding. Best case scenario is now 3 months to open the road - 5 days to open an emergency access lane IF the road is still there underneath the rubble and IF this continuing heavy rain doesn’t bring down more.

Impressive landslide, hope they decide to relocate all what is a risk there, would be insane to keep using those buildings. I hope that in time vegetation achieves the stabilization of that steep cliff. Glad to know you are unharmed and that you are even enjoying the ensuing isolation.

This is the 3rd major slide on that hillside since 2012. The other sections weren’t quite as large nor as close to the upper portion of the road. Because of the steepness and crumbly nature of the hill, they installed metal netting.

Problem right now is it’s still raining. 1 to 2 inches per hour predicted for today. South side of the island got flooded out yesterday - was coming down at a rate of up to 4 in per hour. Plus, most of our worse floods and landslides have happened in April. Still have another month of hard rain to go.

And yet still grooving the internet.

Never rebuilt. Just sitting there rotting for years. Looks like Land After People and now the ocean level has been rising and that portion of beach is basically gone and the ocean is eroding the edge of the highway.

Oh yeah! Our power and cable is still on! We have been warned that if there is an outage though that they won’t be able to get in and fix it unless they can helicopter a crew and equipment in. High wind warning today so I’m enjoying the internet while I can.
