Massive Landslide Cuts Off Kauai’s North Shore

They were able to clear one narrow lane for emergency access yesterday so this morning we woke up to the news of garbage collection and post office up and running again!

This is a Facebook post to our local community. (Eileen is the post master of our very tiny post office.) I honestly don’t know where or how they’re going to put and sort 2000 packages!!!

“ Aloha, Joe gave Eileen a ride to the P.O. this morning. The post office will be open from 8:30 until 4:00 today for mail that was already in Hanalei before the slide. Mail held in Kilauea will be coming to Hanalei today on a truck to be put out tomorrow or the next day. They have over 2000 packages backlogged, so be patient. Mahalo Eileen!”

This is a GLPer’s dream. Get to utilize your prepping skills yet do it comfortably. Doom Glamping style.

For example - other places after a disaster get MREs but we’re getting gourmet, chef curated meal kits delivered. Not paid for by government or other agencies, regular people and businesses are simply stepping up and taking charge.

Still stuck. They cleared one emergency lane and are anticipating opening for the public on Saturday. One lane, alternating traffic led as a convoy with a pilot car - 2 hrs in the morning and 5 hrs in the evening.

Not sure how long that’s going to work. No big trucks allowed on the upper part of the road since they’re still worried about it collapsing and it hasn’t stopped raining for days.

1000 + residents, workers and deliveries trying to get in and out along with the tourist hoards in such a small time window, what could go wrong?

I’m staying put, making some popcorn and watch the clusterfuck unfold.

U WANT HELICOPTER OR MULTI DRONE DELIVERY?

We have a community organized ferry service and already have had helicopters bringing in electric company repair crews and delivering for pharmacies.

Well we were completely shut off for about 10 days. There is now one lane that is open 2 hrs early in the morning, 1 hr around noon and 5 hrs in the evening. Not easy getting in and out so they are still selling 5 gal cans of gas about once a week for those that can’t make the convoy times to get out and back.

We all live here at that end of the road because we could give a hoot about convenience. Power is always going out, even on sunny days (jungle growing over the wires), cell service is sketchy at best and nonexistent in some areas. I have to walk around the property to find reception to make a call. Seven one lane bridges to get to where I am, 3 of which close when it flash floods.

Biggest issue since the landslide is that UPS got super backed up. They only have one truck that comes up here once a day and have been packing it full but I still have packages I’ve been waiting for - at least 4 waiting in line for their chance to get on the truck.

wow, that does sound like paradise.
