But a new study suggests there may be a great deal more going on in the cold, dark regions of space beyond the eighth planet orbiting our sun, Neptune. Scientists have discovered a bizarre new object, less than 124 miles (200km) across, with a strange tilted orbit that sends it high above the flat orbital disk of the rest of the solar system. They found the new minor planet, which they have named Niku after the Chinese for rebellious, which seems to be part of a cluster of other similar objects and icy planetoids with similar orbits. It suggests they may have been pushed or pulled into this strange orbit by something far larger orbiting beyond Neptune. At first the astronomers thought it could be the hypothetical Planet Nine that astronomers have been hunting for far beyond Pluto on the farthest edge of the solar system. However, they found Niku and its fellow tiny worlds are too close to the rest of the solar system to have been tugged out of place by this theoretical planet. Instead, they suggest Niku and its neighbours may have been swept into their strange orbit by another undiscovered dwarf planet like Pluto or Ceres." Quoting: SN7 Astronomers have nicknamed it "Niku," which means rebellious in Chinese, because of the object's reckless behavior. The object is about 160,000 times fainter than Neptune, suggesting that it could be less than 120 miles in diameter. That makes the icy celestial body a minor planet, which means it's smaller than a planet but not quite a comet. Niku orbits the solar system at a bizarre angle: a plane tilted 110 degrees to the flat plane of the solar system. This flat plane of the solar system - a disk in which planets move around the sun - is a defining quality of a planetary system. But Niku, already moving above the plane, travels a little further upward every day. And unlike the other law-abiding objects in the solar system, Niku travels against the flow of the bulk of the solar system, taking a wild backwards swing around the sun. Objects that don't move within the plane of the solar system or spin in the opposite direction must have been shoved off course by something else or tugged by the gravity of another object." She was referring to the discovery of a TNO or trans-Neptunian object, something which sits beyond Neptune in the outer solar system. This one is 160,000 times fainter than Neptune, which means the icy world could be less than 200 kilometres in diameter. It’s currently above the plane of the solar system and with every passing day, it’s moving upwards – a fact that makes it an oddity. The TNO orbits in a plane that’s tilted 110 degrees to the plane of the solar system. What’s more, it swings around the sun backwards unlike most of the other objects in the solar system. With this in mind, the team that discovered the TNO nicknamed it “Niku” after the Chinese adjective for rebellious. [link to www.newscientist.com (secure)] Have no fear, Spock is here!!! LLAP |

But right now, nobody knows what this other object or group of objects could be. It's possible that Niku is part of a group of objects all moving with an unusual alignment to the plane of the Solar System. If such a grouping sounds familiar, that could be because it was this kind of gathering of unusually aligned objects in the Kuiper belt that gave rise to the Planet Nine hypothesis – the suspected (but unconfirmed) massive planet on the fringes of the Solar System that orbits the Sun once every 10,000 to 20,000 years. Holman and the Niku team examined whether Niku's unusual movements could be attributed to the existence of Planet Nine – or perhaps a dwarf planet in the vicinity – but the minor planet is too close to the centre of the Solar System, so there's still no explanation as yet. "We don't know the answer," admits Holman. It's worth pointing out that the team's study has yet to be peer-reviewed, but it's available on arXiv.org while the researchers take feedback prior to publication. Until that time, or until we know more, some are taking the Niku findings with a grain of salt. "As they say in the paper, what they have right now is a hint," Konstantin Batygin, one of the researchers who suggested the existence of Planet Nine, told New Scientist. "If this hint develops into a complete story that would be fantastic." [link to www.sciencealert.com] Have no fear, Spock is here!!! LLAP |

We report the discovery of a retrograde TNO, which we nickname "Niku", detected by the Pan-STARRS 1 Outer Solar System Survey. Our numerical integrations show that the orbital dynamics of Niku are very similar to that of 2008 KV42 (Drac), with a half-life of ∼500 Myr. Comparing similar high inclination TNOs and Centaurs (q>10 AU, a<100 AU and i>60∘), we find that these objects exhibit a surprising clustering of ascending node, and occupy a common orbital plane. This orbital configuration has high statistical significance: 3.8-σ. An unknown mechanism is required to explain the observed clustering. This discovery may provide a pathway to investigate a possible reservoir of high-inclination objects. [link to arxiv.org] Have no fear, Spock is here!!! LLAP |

So how many more planets are going to suddenly appear in our Solar System???? LOL!!! Things are getting weirder by the day.
