The prospect is spurring both intrigue and concern in the life sciences community because it might be possible, such as through cloning, to use a synthetic genome to create human beings without biological parents. While the project is still in the idea phase, and also involves efforts to improve DNA synthesis in general, it was discussed at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday at Harvard Medical School in Boston. The nearly 150 attendees were told not to contact the news media or to post on Twitter during the meeting. Organizers said the project could have a big scientific payoff and would be a follow-up to the original Human Genome Project, which was aimed at reading the sequence of the three billion chemical letters in the DNA blueprint of human life. The new project, by contrast, would involve not reading, but rather writing the human genome — synthesizing all three billion units from chemicals. But such an attempt would raise numerous ethical issues. Could scientists create humans with certain kinds of traits, perhaps people born and bred to be soldiers? Having a meeting that's published, and a secret, is not science, it's corporate business. It's also against national ideas to have a published secret meeting about making a genome. You think it hasn't been an ethical subject for at least 30 years? Cloning? Synthetic genomes? Some people in China made a 3 strand genome, where it requires certain supplements to keep alive. The meeting is more than likely about competing with China. They let the public cut off a penis and call themselves a woman in public...not science. Then science talks about really modifying a creature, and it's nobody's business. Beings without biological parents is a very easy thing to do. We do it all the time with vaccines and mutations over the decades of living. If you're vaccinated, you're a different being from a being that is born a certain way. how we were when we were conceived and how we genetically end, two different things. I think it's about, how does the law provide freedom to a person who is engineered like that? It's as disgusting as a braindead baby girl that won't grow, that some woman keeps around for 20 years, and the system medically supports that.
