Pinched nerve or pulled muscle?
Had it off and on for ten years or so. Every now and then I wake up with a sharp constant pain that begins between a shoulder blade a spine. The pain goes up to include the muscles of the base of the neck, making holding my head up a constant annoyance.
It'll go away after a few days.
Wtf is that?

You forgot to consider arthritis OP.
When you find a piece of shit along side the road and you poke it with a stick, what do you expect to find inside of it, gold?
No, it's just going to stink more.

Read the books Healing Back Pain, The Mindbody Prescription, and then The Divided Mind — all by Dr. John Sarno. Read them in that order.

Re: Pinched nerve or pulled muscle?
Could really be either- totally helpful, right? It's most likely a pinched nerve that irritates your muscles and causes them to work overtime (leading to a 'heavy head')

See a chiropractor if you can. Usually just getting your bones back in alignment can really help. People are pro and con on chiropractors- your decision.

Get a massage. Again, if you don't have the means, this can also be a little pricy (around $60/hour) but feels sooooo freakin good. Get someone who does deep tissue massage.

Ok- if both of those are too pricey...

Sauna...or just chill out in your bathroom with the hot water steam for a while. Massage that area with an essential oil-Wintergreen essential oil also contains salicylic acid (asprin!).

Wet hand towels thrown in the microwave til hot work well too.

Posture is also a big thing. Obviously being hunched over isn't healthy for your spine- this is one that I have to work the most on, and have really never experienced relief from, but I'll pass on what my chiro told me. Same goes for yoga and Pilates-both work on strengthening your muscles.

Sure that if you've had this for 10 years, you probably know what works best for you.. I've had this same problem, but it usually comes up when I've skipped the chiropractor for a couple months! Good luck!
