Agree.

The purpose of grammar, spelling, and punctuation is to communicate clearly. Those who cannot do so will find it increasingly difficult to understand much beyond "newspeak", as Orwell so aptly called it. This is, as he explained in "1984", deliberate: it is but one aspect of control. Even if the current corrupt world were to disintegrate overnight, many would be hard-pressed to comprehend the writings of scientists, philosophers, medical doctors, or anything else requiring a significant investment of time.

We all laugh at the examples of deliberately misspelled words designed to "prove" that proper spelling is unnecessary. But all they really prove is that we don't take communication and deep thinking seriously.

I believe correct grammar and spelling are important. Not as important as getting ones' idea across.

Exactly. The idea a person may think is being conveyed clearly is often completely misunderstood by others, due simply to poor grammar or spelling.

(And it's "one's", not "ones'".)

I sympathize with those who use English as a second language. But the vast majority of those mangling the language display an American or U.K. flag.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with smart phones. A little harder to type on, multitask to look up correct spelling etc.

On the one hand I agree with u OP, but I found the intentional mispellings and bad grammer is part of the GLP culture. Hmmm I did see a link to the GLP list of mispellings earlier, so I figured if u cant beet them, join em!

People who focus on the grammar are missing the forest for the trees. Stop focusing on things that do not matter in the big scheme of things, focus instead on the message. I understand that details matter, and attention to detail is a lost art. However, some people have an amazing message to give, they are just not that equipped to convey it. Have some patience, have some understanding, and try to look beyond the grammatical errors. You may be surprised what you find...

I don't think anybody's saying grammar is THE most important thing, or that we can't possibly get the message unless the grammar is perfect.

Let the grammarians rant in their own thread; it's better than doing it in someone else's. And compared to all the other crap threads, I don't think this one is worthy of criticism.

The point is that poor communication can have serious consequences, and that deliberate dumbing-down of society is a long-known strategy, as I pointed out regarding Orwell.
