Why do people on GLP not know how to spell or use good grammar? | |

Quoting: Rogue Messenger GLP is just a microcosm of the decaying, illiterate, government-schooled generation of slaves and drones being raised by mental defectives and amoral elite degenerates. It's what you get when you evict Bible study, American history, and morality from both schools and the public arena. The ability to think is replaced by the desire to belong, and the ability to communicate is replaced by the desire to be amused. Agree. The purpose of grammar, spelling, and punctuation is to communicate clearly. Those who cannot do so will find it increasingly difficult to understand much beyond "newspeak", as Orwell so aptly called it. This is, as he explained in "1984", deliberate: it is but one aspect of control. Even if the current corrupt world were to disintegrate overnight, many would be hard-pressed to comprehend the writings of scientists, philosophers, medical doctors, or anything else requiring a significant investment of time. We all laugh at the examples of deliberately misspelled words designed to "prove" that proper spelling is unnecessary. But all they really prove is that we don't take communication and deep thinking seriously. Last Edited by Keep2theCode on 11/13/2013 12:45 PM Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? But as soon as I left , most jobs were labor or things where I never had to write anymore. So over the years my spelling gets worse and worse. I figure by the time im 60 I wont be able to spell anything lmao. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17095177 Lucky for me spelling does not impact my life whatsoever. Still had great jobs in life and made good money. And this, apparently, is all that matters in life. Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? (Gal. 4:16) |

Not as important as getting ones' idea across. Quoting: rachaelsdad They are intimately and inextricably intertwined. Exactly. The idea a person may think is being conveyed clearly is often completely misunderstood by others, due simply to poor grammar or spelling. (And it's "one's", not "ones'".) Quoting: Marilllon And some of us are not native speakers and doing our best? I sympathize with those who use English as a second language. But the vast majority of those mangling the language display an American or U.K. flag. Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? (Gal. 4:16) |

Quoting: CurbSide Don't get me wrong as I'm a poor speller myself. But I take the extra few seconds to check my words... look up a word online... or simply run a spell checker to make a comment more readable. My observation: People on this site as well as other online comment sites, just type as fast and sloppy as they can and it makes them look stupid. My theory: Being a good speller does not make you better than others. But being one who checks their work prior to posting does give you more credibility. Too boter pretansious peeple. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with smart phones. A little harder to type on, multitask to look up correct spelling etc. |

Stop focusing on things that do not matter in the big scheme of things, focus instead on the message. I understand that details matter, and attention to detail is a lost art. However, some people have an amazing message to give, they are just not that equipped to convey it. Have some patience, have some understanding, and try to look beyond the grammatical errors. You may be surprised what you find... Quoting: Rising Son I don't think anybody's saying grammar is THE most important thing, or that we can't possibly get the message unless the grammar is perfect. Let the grammarians rant in their own thread; it's better than doing it in someone else's. And compared to all the other crap threads, I don't think this one is worthy of criticism. The point is that poor communication can have serious consequences, and that deliberate dumbing-down of society is a long-known strategy, as I pointed out regarding Orwell.
