Anyone else notice an abundance of flies this year?
This year I feel like I've encountered a significant increase number of flies than I've seen in years past.

Anyone else observing this phenomenon or is it just me?

My location is North Cali.

I haven't personality noticed the grasshoppers but they don't seem all that prevalent here anyway.

Ok. So Cali and Oklahoma are in.

No fly doom here, unless of course you count the dog doo in the back yard, because it attracts the little bastards.

Bees have been a big deal here especially in the rural areas.

Just how bad is the fly problem in Northern Cali? Could it be a local problem? Flies are attracted to dead things. Could a dead animal be on your property?

The terrorists attacks which will be launched in the United States will be blamed upon middle eastern religious fanatics, Christian fundamentalists, white supremacists, Patriots, or Militias. A more immediate result of these operations will be the increased use of military forces, weaponry, and equipment such as tanks and armored personnel carriers in civilian law enforcement, the suspension or elimination of Habeas Corpus, the elimination of jury trials, the attempted disarming of the American People, and the institution of martial law with show-trials conducted by a tribunal of judges. - William Cooper 1997 (RIP)

More flies than usual.

Gobs and gobs and gobs of lizards around where I live. Incredible amounts of lizards. I could start a lizard farm if anyone were interested in the boring little creatures.

Actually here in Michigan it hasn't been that bad this year. Last year was pure hell with bugs crawling out of everywhere.
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

I'd like to go quietly in my sleep, like grandpa did. Not screaming in terror like the people in the back seat of the car he was driving.

It seems quite a bit worse. We've seen it at our house, in Tahoe where we vacation, in Lake Almanor where we camp, in the foothills where my parents live and near Modesto where my in-laws live. In general, good chunks of N Cali.

We have had bees up the yin yang here this summer. The heat and humidity had something to do with it I'm sure but the weather has changed in the past few days now and activity has decreased. It was really bad for about a week here as far as bees go. No joy for the flies here this year at least.

I was thinking we might get an Indian summer because my dogs just blew their coats. Also the hummingbirds are still here and they don't usually hang around this long.

OP, just found this for FYI:

Plants are one of the best ways to deter flies. Basil or Rue placed in pots outside the door will do a great job. It is also suggested that marigold will deter flies. Crushed mint has also been known to deter flies. Get some mint and crush it and sprinkle it around problem areas.

Containers of essential oils. Get a small container and place a piece of cloth or sponge in it. Soak with an essential oil such as Lavender, Citronella, Eucalyptus or Pennyroyal. Close the lid and store for about a day. This will build up the scent in the container. Then place on tables or eating areas when you are entertaining.

Sprays:
Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water and add a few drops of any of these essential oils

Lavender
Citronella
Eucalyptus
Pennyroyal
