I was thinking we might get an Indian summer because my dogs just blew their coats. Also the hummingbirds are still here and they don't usually hang around this long.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46874466

Lots of win with the hummingbird comment. There are a ton of those here still too.

Yes, especially around Obama.

That STILL freaks me out. Can't even imagine letting a fly sit 'lighting' on my face, much less just continuign to sit there. Dang. That's some un-human stuff.

I'm having a lot less now. Didn't have to put out any traps this summer or last. I think it's because a next door neighbor moved out and he must have had open trash or something to attract them.

Re: Anyone else notice an abundance of flies this year?
OP, just found this for FYI:

Plants are one of the best ways to deter flies. Basil or Rue placed in pots outside the door will do a great job. It is also suggested that marigold will deter flies. Crushed mint has also been known to deter flies. Get some mint and crush it and sprinkle it around problem areas.

Containers of essential oils. Get a small container and place a piece of cloth or sponge in it. Soak with an essential oil such as Lavender, Citronella, Eucalyptus or Pennyroyal. Close the lid and store for about a day. This will build up the scent in the container. Then place on tables or eating areas when you are entertaining.

Sprays:
Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water and add a few drops of any of these essential oils

Lavender
Citronella
Eucalyptus
Pennyroyal

Wow. Killer info. I have some lavender and eucalyptus oil in the house right now.

picard win

Re: Anyone else notice an abundance of flies this year?
Yes. I'm in PA and have had a horrible time with fruit flies/gnats. They seem to be coming from my kitchen sink. I say that because one night I put an inverted bowl over one of the drains in the kitchen sink, and in the morning there was several dozens of them inside the bowl. I've tried everything. This is the first year I've lived in a house on city water. I've had well water for the last 15 years. I can't imagine this is normal. And before anyone says that I'm a pig- I don't put food down my drains, I keep a clean house, the trash can is small and has a lid, and trash gets put outside every night.

Actually here in Michigan it hasn't been that bad this year. Last year was pure hell with bugs crawling out of everywhere.

Re: Anyone else notice an abundance of flies this year?
Well flies will always be around. I've only seen 1 Bee this year... 1 friggin bee!

Saw a few wasps, a couple hornets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41777064

We have had bees up the yin yang here this summer. The heat and humidity had something to do with it I'm sure but the weather has changed in the past few days now and activity has decreased. It was really bad for about a week here as far as bees go. No joy for the flies here this year at least.
 Quoting: Sobriquet

Aside from the annoyance factor that's probably good news right? No colony collapse in your area.
 Quoting: Doomish

Definitely a good thing. The bees are thriving and have now gone dormant (at least it seems that way) and no flies..... Utopia!! Come to Wisconsin....oh wait. Winter.

Someone thought I should have one of those stupid Swiffer mop things. I would never have bought one. I like the plain old mop.

Anyway, the liquid that comes in them is nothing but perfume and is full of chemicals to boot. It cleans nothing at all. I think that liquid is so sweet-like that it further attracts the fruit flies. I went back to vinegar and/or a bleach mix for my tile floors.
