SEE PAGE 8 FOR UPDATE!!!!

I just spent the last 3 days at the vet with my Miniature Dachshund. I had every test run for parasites, from A to Z, X-rays to rule out obstruction and 2 days at the vet clinic with constant observation and IV fluids.

My dog had blood in her runny stools, and was vomiting a white foamy puke and was drooling.

Every test imaginable has been done on her and it has now been concluded that she has a virus $1500.00 later....

This is also confirmed because now my other 2 dogs are now displaying the same symptoms.

I live in a very secluded area and my dogs only go out in a fenced in area to play and walk. I have tried to keep them separated as much as possible, but apparently this virus is highly contagious.

My dogs are always up to date on their shots and have had their heart worm medications on a regular basis.

I cook for my dogs, so there is no chance of them being sick from the dog food.

AGAIN - signs to look for
1. Drooling and foamy vomit
2. Diarrhea and runny stools
3. Blood in stools
4. Lethargic

My Dachshund is feeling some better today, but the other 2 dogs are now starting with the same symptoms.

Just seen this thread. I am so sorry OP, I really don't know what to say and nothing I could say could possible make it any good anyway.

I am just hoping your pets recover xxx

Not sure if anyone said the water supply but that's what's causing the virus. Microbiological contamination of the water. Use bottled water and filter. Nobody should be drinking the tap water!

I’ve never been considered a shill here but I think it’s time I popped my cherry!

News flash..your dog got better because it was on IV fluids for 2 days and it got medicine/monitoring to balance its GI flora, ulcers, reduce stomach acid, etc. Thank your Vet because he/she saved your pets life.

Next time it happens don't take them to the vet, try it your new “holistic” way only and update us then.

I know it’s hard to believe, but there is a reason Veterinarians go to college for 8 years and it’s not to “rip” people off, its to help animals.

Whether it is human or veterinary medicine, it is still “practicing” medicine:
1. There is not a test, be it blood, urine, stool that will tell your vet/doc exactly what is wrong. BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION IN MEDICINE-BLOOD TEST DON’T TELL YOU EVERYTHING.

2. Secondary symptoms are extremely common with primary symptom, ie: you drool when you’re nauseous. Also, do you know what caused your last bout with diarrhea? It could have been something eaten, bug/germ, stress…see my point.

3. People think they are their dogs greatest “savior” b/c they cook food for them, are you a nutritionist? Do you know how much fat/calories that you are giving your pet with your home-made meals? You could have given them pancreatitis and that could have caused all your symptoms. I know people who feed only chicken and rice and think it’s the greatest but their dogs are missing out on a lot of key nutrients. Good dog food companies formulate their foods to be balanced-something most people (unless you’re a canine nutritionist) cannot do.

4. There are so many differentials out there that could have caused your dogs to get sick, do you know what made you sick the last time you had a cold? Can you pin-point it to the germy door knob you touched, maybe the restaurant you ate at or the germ factories that go to day care 40 hours a week? No, you just know that you “got sick.” Same with your dogs, they could have ate a bug, a weed, dog poop, licked the kitchen floor, ate food that you cooked for them, there are thousands of things that could have got them sick.

Sorry to rant but the simple fact is your vet fixed/saved your animals life-thank them and let them know you appreciate all the hard work they did.

Rodent poison now contains anticoagulant. It causes internal bleeding and slow death. They give them a coagulant shot with potassium to counteract the poison.

Does sound like this may be your culprit.

I was also wondering if maybe somehow someone may have thrown something over the fence - however I have searched and searched the area and have found nothing. My other 2 dogs are very picky and do not eat just anything. I have gone out with them every time they go outside.

dog adopted from the shelter system had PURE BLOOD clots and all instead of feces
for days and all i was told was it was some form of a communicable virus common among sheleter guys-

went on line to find remedies
and there are quite a few
tripe
garlic/cayenne--and yeah i know the OPINIONS ARE DIVIDED and strong inre giving dogs garlic
canned pumpkin
and there were a few more--

go to those naturo healing sites---also the watercure2.org to keep them hydrated--
generic pedialyte too

i do remember cooking rice and giving them capsules of garlic/cayenne and a tablespoon of pumpkin
and it STOPPED.

Re: BE ALERT FOR THE SIGNS - All 3 of my dogs have a "virus" signs to observe - vet has no clue other than Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis UPDATE
OP you have been had by a veterinarian who knows EXACTLY what the problem is. I have kept dogs all my life and in that time had three poisoned with common rat poison.

Unfortunately some vets care more about making money than being conscientious, but massive vitamin K injections are the treatment and it might save the animals or sometimes they may recover or their own.

DO NOT FLAME ME for making this diagnosis and putting a stop to all of the paranoid bullshit about some highly contagious viruses, that's not what it is , it is common rat poison like Dea-con. Dogs will eat it because it is made to be tasty and the active ingredient is undetectable to them.

Now you say your dogs are kept sequestered in a fenced in area, but I'll lay 100 to one odds somewhere at some time in the past 10 years or so, someone put the long lasting poison out and the little dogs got to it, perhaps in a crawl space, basement or some area they can get but you can see.

Do not be fooled by these schiester vets, he will give the fogs vitamin K and make them better and charge you an arm and a leg because that's how they operate.

By the way, rats are very hard to fool with poison because they can smell it just like dogs, and that is why such a powerful poison is used with a tasty bait. The percentage of active ingredient in rat poison is something like .001%, and the symptoms you listed in your OP are from ingesting rat poison.

I hear you on the whole rat poison theory, but my dogs did not display other symptoms of such an event such as bruising, blood in their urine, and their lab work and tests came back negative for PT/ PTT . Believe me, I made sure they were tested for this.

has the vet ruled out the Parvo virus? those are all symptoms of it, as well as severe dehydration (the main killing aspect). its incredibly contagious and kills dogs usually within 1-2 days if untreated

Exact same thing happened to my dog. Large Husky mix.

He was sick. real sick. Bloody stools, bloody vomit.

I weventually found out what it was with him.

It was the food dyes that are in dog food. When I finally got him on a food that had no dyes, the problems cleared up.
