Pacific Northwest Coast is "Long Overdue" for mega quake and tsunami - Daily Mail | |

Coastal towns would be inundated, schools, buildings and bridges would collapse, and economic damage could hit $32 billion" :construction: if you live in this area...the reaction to these type of statements is DUHHHH. many even felt that mt saint helens was gonna be the trigger. it's inevitable that thousands will die especially along the coast. and guess what? the same shitty 2 lane roads leading to and from the coastal cities are still the same death traps. once huge trees have blocked their escape routes, most will have to hoof it to as high of ground as possible. those that are ready...are. those that aren't...aren't. those that live on the coast already know their fate, but just don't believe it's happening in their lifetime. if a mega quake happens and a super tsunami rolls in way more than 10,000 will meet their demise. for the most part now, all these warnings do now is create fear and fear mongering on sites like these. there's gonna be way more people here worrying about on GLPee than on coastal PNW towns/cities. if it's centered farther inland and you work in the cities, there's absolutely nothing you're gonna do but ride it out. i just hope it happens in the evening or at night so most of my family and friends as well as many others will be at home and able to get at (hopefully) stored emergency supplies. until then then...most around here don't spend their lives worrying about it being as there's more pressing issues like working, paying bills, takin care of the kids and/or elderly, etc... i'm 20 miles south of seattle and spend very few minutes in a year worrying about it anymore. it's gonna come...get over it and live your life until it does. so like i said before about a possible mega quake...DUHHHH. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 33885280 United States 03/15/2013 07:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I read an interesting blog recently about the lack of earthquakes in the Cascadia zone. The writer also mentions that the Charlotte Island quakes were something that has not been recorded before and they are still trying to figure it out. Quoting: Sol Neman 6 YEAR DROUGHT OF LARGE PACIFIC NORTHWEST EARTHQUAKES: [link to www.pnsn.org] Apparently this area zone averages 300-350 years between 8+ earthquakes and the last one occurred in January 26, 1700; 312 years ago…looks like we are due! It’ll be interesting to see how the high rise buildings react to a long duration quake. Most building codes for earthquakes are for short duration quakes. Combine that with the massive tsunami, which will be similar to the one spoke of in the Makah Tsunami legend. The legend that has been confirmed by geological evidence. 13 YEAR CASCADIA STUDY COMPLETE – EARTHQUAKE RISK LOOMS LARGE: [link to oregonstate.edu] NATIVE AMERICAN LEGENDS OF TSUNAMIS IN THE PACFIC NORTHWEST: [link to walrus.wr.usgs.gov] While I was finding the above information I also stumbled across some interesting volcano activity. Most interesting is the Newberry Volcano. It is the largest volcano in the Cascades, covering an area the size of Rhode Island. Its last eruption was 1300 years ago and the last major eruption 75,000 years ago. Now fast forward to today; over the last 40 years Newberry volcano has averaged 0 earthquakes. In the month of November there have been 24 earthquakes! Mount Hood and Rainer have both show increased activity in the same mountain chain. Iceland, Alaska and Russia all show increased activity as well. Most recent change further north was the Cleveland Volcano. On November 10, 2012 there was an ash cloud and they changed the alert level from ADVISORY to WATCH with the following warning, “Sudden explosions of blocks and ash remain possible with little or no warning. The previous confirmed explosion occurred on November 10. Ash clouds, if produced, could exceed 20,000 feet above sea level.” NEWBERRY VOLCANO USGS INFO: [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] RECENT EARTHQUAKES NEAR VOLCANOES: [link to www.pnsn.org] ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATES: [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] USGS ELEVATED VOLCANIC ACTIVITY AND INFORMATION RELEASE: [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] KAMCHATKA VOLCANIC ACTIVITY: [link to www.kscnet.ru] The fire & brimstone (sulfur) that will rain down do not come from outside our planet. This will all come from volcanoes erupting miles into the atmosphere. The molten rock and ash will come raining back down into the extremely dry (decade of drought), beetle killed forest (plague?), there will be huge wildfires. The earth will shake and the crust will rupture, an extreme amount of methane and other gases will be released (smells like sulfur)…there will be large explosions where the gas releases near wildfires & molten rock…where there is no ignition the fumes will cause massive die off of many living things. There will be a giant wave that will wipe out the coast line and the waters will never recede back to their current levels. Still hasn't happened and so far their predictions suck. Agreed. For the past 50+ years the predictions have been that the big one is coming within the next 50 years. I think the 50 years has been up for a while. The PNW has probably been the most non-eventful weather-doom-catastrophe location for quite a while now. A few storms aside, not much has happened since May 18, 1980. I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

Instead : "Wilson told legislators that there was a similar event 313 years ago in the Pacific Northwest, and 'we're well within the window for it to happen again.' " Historically it has produced a huge quake every 300 to 600 years. More often in the 300 range. It's been over 300 years since the last major one. In that regard, you could say it's "overdue". Activity up there has also picked up. |

I don't see how a 'pattern' is derived from so little evidence. To be sure someday will be 'the' day. Humans are still clueless random beings. |

[link to en.wikipedia.org] The geological record reveals that "great earthquakes" (those with moment magnitude 8 or higher) occur in the Cascadia subduction zone about every 500 years on average, often accompanied by tsunamis. There is evidence of at least 13 events at intervals from about 300 to 900 years with an average of 570—590 years.[6] Previous earthquakes are estimated to have occurred in 1310 AD, 810 AD, 400 AD, 170 BC and 600 BC. |

There have been a lot of small ones there lately and today is really got some action [link to quakes.globalincidentmap.com] But all these small ones might be what loosens up for the big one(S). I think when Cali gets a big quake so will other places around the world as well.
