No, just surprised that the angle on this story seems so profound - "When...not if"

well when i was in school elementary to high school i lived in the pacific northwest and this was common knowledge in school that one day a major quake would come not if but when and back in the 90s they said it was over due it wasnt done in a fear tactic way it was done so we were aware and knew to look for the signs of quake and what to do and where to go we did monthly whole school earthquake drills it was actually in my opinion very helpful cause by knowing you know what to do your less worried when one does occur and a few did while i lived their

If it happens in the middle of the day most people are not gonna be less worried OR know what to do. Even the best laid plans fall to pieces when people's brains cease to function properly in a catastrophe. Some will be able to function, but most of us have not been in continual life saving catastrophe training to function in a helpful manner as needed. If you get stuck in Seattle and your kids are in school out in Federal Way or further, all the earthquake preparedness and knowledge will mean nothing to you. This area is filled with small water spanning bridges and overpasses that when collapsed, will block thousands of people's escape routes. Some routes may even be inaccessible by foot and most people won't be able to handle a possible 20, 30, or up to 50 mile or further hike home. Even if the terrain doesn't hamper you enough, you'll have to contend with the roving bands of marauders trying to take what little you do have. You'll be lucky if they don't decide to rape and leave you dead or dying on the side of the road too. If it really destroys buildings like businesses and schools and you have no telephone or cell phone contact good luck on that not worrying so much thing. When I was in school in Seattle inside a hundred yr old 3 story brick building, our great training was to get under a 5 pound desk, kiss your own ass goodbye and get ready for tons of rubble to come crashing down on you. When you can't get in contact with loved ones that you know need you at that moment in time...all you do is worry. I'm at least glad of only being a 7 minute drive to work, but even that could turn into an all day hiking journey with the way roads and overpasses are set up here. My wife is a bit further, but at least is working in a ground level nursing home that has back up power, food, water and medicines to help patients and employees alike in an extreme emergency. But like I mentioned earlier, the roving bands of miscreants will be out in full force within hours of any great catastrophe and can at that time only be dealt with by having some fire power. I believe your best immediate emergency supplies for around here are walking shoes/boots, a warm coat, a little extra water to go AND a gun. Remember that you can't help others out if you can't help yourself first. When a mega quake strikes here, it's not gonna be pretty.

"More than 10,000 people could die WHEN- not if - a monster earthquake and tsunami occur just off the Pacific Northwest coast, researchers told Oregon legislators today.

Coastal towns would be inundated, schools, buildings and bridges would collapse, and economic damage could hit $32 billion"

if you live in this area...the reaction to these type of statements is DUHHHH. many even felt that mt saint helens was gonna be the trigger. it's inevitable that thousands will die especially along the coast. and guess what? the same shitty 2 lane roads leading to and from the coastal cities are still the same death traps. once huge trees have blocked their escape routes, most will have to hoof it to as high of ground as possible. those that are ready...are. those that aren't...aren't. those that live on the coast already know their fate, but just don't believe it's happening in their lifetime. if a mega quake happens and a super tsunami rolls in way more than 10,000 will meet their demise. for the most part now, all these warnings do now is create fear and fear mongering on sites like these. there's gonna be way more people here worrying about on GLPee than on coastal PNW towns/cities. if it's centered farther inland and you work in the cities, there's absolutely nothing you're gonna do but ride it out. i just hope it happens in the evening or at night so most of my family and friends as well as many others will be at home and able to get at (hopefully) stored emergency supplies. until then then...most around here don't spend their lives worrying about it being as there's more pressing issues like working, paying bills, takin care of the kids and/or elderly, etc... i'm 20 miles south of seattle and spend very few minutes in a year worrying about it anymore. it's gonna come...get over it and live your life until it does. so like i said before about a possible mega quake...DUHHHH.
