Oh you mean 30 x 2 + 32 = 92 degrees, now it's hot. I never forgive and I never forget I am a licensed firearm holder. I will, under protection of law, use lethal force if attacked. |

You don't say, 'it's 30 degrees, wow that's cold, no wait. blah blah blah..' You say, wow it's how, I wonder what the temperature is. Oh, it's 30. And they say it will be 32 tomorrow. that means it will be hotter. I always figured that it was because a metre itself is divisible by ten and that was a good place to start. They tried to teach children both systems at once. But the one adults still used was standard. Which meant all the kids learned to think of measurements that way instinctively at the time. That's why the attempt failed int he U.S. It isn't about difficulty or lack of intelligence but social conditioning. I knowwithout thinking about it how tall a person is if their five-three. Give that to me in meters and I'm way fuzzier. I do all right with the measurements of distance, but that kilo thing is a pain and a half. Try converting liters to gallons in your head. That's why most Americans hate the metric system, because we have another system that works already and our society reinforces that pattern. So I've heard. DON'T BE A DUMB-ASS, READ A BOOK! It's the same, there were lots of systems in place and lots of various measurements. the old 'standard' you are so fond of included feet, inches, yards, spans, fathoms, miles etc. And it worked fine for primitive systems and ameritards. then people realized that different measurements were needed both bigger, smaller and a standard that all can use. For instance, the foot of my wife is about 7" long, whereas the foot of your partner is 14", so what is a foot. As for bigger and smaller, imperial works fine for your day to day activities. eg. this hog pen is 8 feet by 8 feet. But how would you compare..... nanometer picometer millimeter centimeter meter hectometer kilometer megameter gigameter what is it in imperial???? how many nano inches in pico inch? how many inches in a gigamile? nano, pico giga are all factors of 10. hey! our number system is based on..... 10. now that makes a lot of sense. the imperial system is retarded and only used for basic measurements. The rest is all metric. Unless you buy 4 inchwatt bulbs, or have a power station that generates 40 megafeetwatts. now go eat a taco. |

That's why most Americans hate the metric system, because we have another system that works already and our society reinforces that pattern. So I've heard. Having been one of those kids - I don't know that I agree with the dual thing being the reason. It was more of a case of knowledge with no use. Nothing in the US was in metric - so what we learned just faded away. There are plenty of places that have both systems and people don't even have to think that hard to go between them. The fun part was being told that by the time we graduated high school - everything would be metric. Pop bottles were - but that's it. My much younger sister was taught metric in the 80's and also told within 10 years - we'd all be metric. At some point - it's time to give it up. The only reason we have anything metric is because so many companies do business in the US and Canada - and rather than bother with separate packaging - they just squish all the info on the one label. According to my friends in England - even though they've been metric for years, there is slow move back to imperial because people just seem to prefer it. I like imperial only because it sounds more warm and fuzzy. Metric is so...clinical. I mean, can you 1.8288 meters reading "111,120 kilometers under the sea"? God Bless President TRUMP! GOD BLESS AMERICA!! |
