Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1323748 That may be true....then again... ...and Fukishima may be a safe place to plan a vacation later this month :) You realize there's quite a big difference between a 5.9 EQ and a 9.0, don't you? It's beyond idiotic to compare the two. |

[link to stores.arkinstitute.com] even if it doesn't happen now, wouldn't you rather have a fwe bottles around just in case?!?!?! |

(OP) User ID: 1288639 United States 08/23/2011 04:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You are correct, Virginia is not Japan. Things in Japan are built with large earthquakes in mind. Also, you are not considering that a 5.8-6.0 in Virginia is like a much bigger quake in CA or Japan. No tsunamis...correct again...however, they may be getting a Category 1 - Category 3 Hurricane within a week...and that baby is BIG. Stay tuned folks. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1510406 Canada 08/23/2011 04:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No tsunamis to take out the diesel generators; but that only half the problem! If the earthquake somehow has made cracks in the reactor cores the water will drain out and the rods will start to heat and melt. and you will be back to the Fukushima dilemma again, where you can add water all you want but the damaged core keeps spilling the water out even if you have your diesel generators online and running with full power. |
hmmmmm User ID: 1406088 United States 08/23/2011 04:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.columbiatribune.com] U.S. nuclear power sets world standard The assumption that older nuclear power plants and an alleged lack of oversight are creating unsafe and unreliable power (“Aging nukes,” Aug. 7) is simply untrue. The power industry’s average capacity factor — a measure of efficiency — has been within close to 90 percent for the past decade. It is impossible to achieve this level of performance consistently if the facility is not well managed and well maintained. William H. Miller, professor MU Research Reactor 1513 Research Park Drive |
