A family friend working at north Anna reported the same thing and sounded calm so I think everything is under control. Some people on this site would rather focus on the what if doom scenarios rather than what's actually happening |

If the earthquake somehow has made cracks in the reactor cores the water will drain out and the rods will start to heat and melt. and you will be back to the Fukushima dilemma again, where you can add water all you want but the damaged core keeps spilling the water out even if you have your diesel generators online and running with full power. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1510406 Category 1- Category 3 Hurricane Irene heading that way by the weekend, I believe. 100MPH+ sustained winds and a whole lotta rain..add in potential tornadoes. Seriously?! I saw on the local DC fox stream a heli filming the plant and both reactor houses where venting alot of steam. That being said it could be normal for all I know. |

Normal? These reactors were built to withstand a 5.9-6.1, but how do they KNOW for sure what the threshold is until tested by an actual quake? Come on Irene...Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye yeah, yeah I know the song is about Eileen, but close enough, eh? The greatest illusion is the illusion of separation. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1324356 United States 08/23/2011 09:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't get the idea we're supposed to be seeing steam...but I'm sure someone else will come along who knows what's what. Article here: [link to www.dom.com] Cooling System The process of generating electricity at North Anna begins with the fission, or splitting, of uranium atoms in the reactor vessel. The vessel is filled with water (not from the lake), which controls, or moderates, the fission process, and removes heat from the reactor core. This water is kept under very high pressure, which prevents it from boiling although it is heated to three times the normal boiling temperature. This hot, pressurized water is pumped to nearby steel containers called steam generators. In the steam generators, the water passes through thousands of small U-shaped tubes — about the diameter of your little finger — transferring its heat to a second, slightly cooler water system. This secondary water becomes steam, which travels through large pipes to spin the turbines in the adjoining building. Spinning at 1,800 RPM, the turbines drive a generator that produces electricity. The steam then is condensed back to a liquid by a third cooling system before it returns to the steam generator to start the process again. The third cooling system's water comes from Lake Anna, and flows through the private WHTF before returning to the lake. |
