He was also a protector of sorts of children and patron saint of sailors. The sailor part is due to an incident that happened when he was young and traveling by ship back from the Holy land. He was born into a very wealthy Roman family and lost his parents to the plague at a young age. He inherited the their wealth and spent his life giving it away. But he did it secretly, never wanting attention or anything in return. . When Roman Emperor Diocletian came to power he was beaten and imprisoned with murderers for refusing to give up his faith. I am not surprised however that his life was spared. Partially because of who his parents were, and also for the fact that he was well liked and known for his kind and generous nature. One true story is that he paid the dowry of a poor mans daughters by throwing sacks of gold through his open window. Back then if you did not have a dowry you could not get married. Quite a few poor families sold off their virgin daughters into slavery. In their case it more than likely would have been the Roman Army, and they would have been "passed around". As each daughter became of age, he tossed gold through the man's window. He helped quite a few desperately poor that way. Sometimes his gold landed in a shoe or stocking drying out by the fire. He died on Dec 6, 343 AD. The truth behind the legend is why I do not see Santa as horrible or a lie. Our legend sprang from the kindness of a real man, a caring and giving man. Santa embodies that spirit and affects us in a positive way. |
