do not overload outlets anymore.. running to many ppliances at once will knock out circuit breakers or fuses. nev er go outside at night to change fuses. wait til til morning...

Divide your rent by 30 and don't pay for the days the electric is fucked up;Or hire an electrician and submit the bill to the slumlord.

I doubt OP has fuses. I also doubt OP overloaded the breaker box as the landlord looked at it already.

I would say a breaker died and knocked out the outlets. They can be divided up between rooms. When I buy a house I turn all the breakers off and plug something that lights up or makes noise into just about every wall socket. I then label the breakers accordingly for easier troubleshooting later.

Unfortunatley you may need to send all notices to your landlord in writing- certified mail if possible, and if not- then hand delivery the notice and have them sign a copy.


Look up the tenents rights for your state AND federal ones ( federal laws over ride state laws) to find out the time lines and definitions of emergency situations.

I would guess that this qualifies as an immediate need with NO waiting due to the possiblity of fire, not to mention lack of electricity and your diminished rightful enjoyment of your paid for property.

Anyhoo... landlords do not really have to do a damn thing until they have recieved written notice. In the notice you want to be to the point- state the problem, if you can -quote the law, and then give them ( depending on the timeline for tenents rights ) a certain amount of days to repsond and correct the problem.

If you ever need to go to court or break the lease the paper trail will back you up :)



It might not hurt for you to call an electrician ( if it is at no cost to you ) for a consult so you will know if your landlord fixes the problem safely and correctly.

You CAN do this, but not until you have sent written notice and given the proper amount of time for appropriate action from the lanlord. It is illegal to withhold rent for any reason without doing so.

Indeed that would be the proper thing to do,but I prefer to grab Mr Slumlord by the throat and squeeze until the problem is fixed. LOL

Did you check your circuit breakers? If they "feel" loose they need re-setting. That - or just reset them all.

By code your fridge will run on its "own" circuit just incase something trips your fridge wont loose power...

You might have a loose connection from the first recptacle that jumps and feeds the others..Maybe a loose power or even a loose neutral

You say that your A/C is not working which in that case is on a 2pole breaker which now sounds like you might have blowen a whole phase! Id be really proud of that!

We do hope that the OP did that. And some old apartments still have fuses. I had a fuse box just 10 years ago.

check to see if one of your outlets IN YOUR KITCHEN has a ground fault interrupter installed in it.

Its a safety device that very well may be linked to your other outlets as well.

If you look at the outlet and you see buttons that say TEST or RESET press the RESET button.


My outlets went out the other day in my kitchen and this was the problem. They are required by law to be installed anywhere an outlet may be close to water.

Yeah, my guess is that whoever checked the breakers didn't try to reset them all. Often they look good but have actually been tripped. Odds are slim that moving a PC caused ANY damage that would require an electrician. Check the breakers first.

Burn the place down and blame the bad outlets. You'll get off scot free. And that's the name of the game in life. Do the worst you can get away with.

It could be your GFI breakers. They look like a normal dual plug wall outlet except they have a red and black button in the center. the red one........ if I remember correctly resets the breaker and the black one tests it. Normally a single outlet of this type will control several other outlets as well. You will find them close to sinks..... Kitchen, bathrooms or laundry room.

They came over on Monday and its been three working days? Yeah something is wrong.

Call the landlord/management company and tell them you need power. If they refuse or give you a line call the city/town builder's inspectors office and ask them about tenant laws and/or a number you can call to find out about your local laws on structural safety of tenanted rented structures.

It is most likely a problem at the circuit board/breaker board - not just a breaker, but a main or a main connection inside. This does mean an electrician should be called.

If you are paying electricity (billed) you can call the electric supplier and ask them what to do - explain to them the situation with the landlord and how this power outage is affecting more than one circuit.

At least we assume its more than one circuit since there is a strict limit to how many outlets and fixtures can be on a circuit. Refrigerators must have a dedicated line, A/C Units usually have to have a dedicated line as well (window mount ones must be allowed on regular volt/amps of your area).

This should be considered an 'emergency' by any electrician company/business they should have sent somebody next day at the very least.

Since no one has come, you can pretty much bet your Landlord forgot or failed to call.

What kind of box do you have, TTgrl, fuse box, or breaker box? What is the condition of the box? good? Things loose and sloppy? If you have breakers that have thrown, sometimes it's hard to tell, so turn OFF all the breakers and SNAP them all back on with a clean, deliberate throw. Does that make sense to you?

If that doesn't restore your power, call the landlord again.

If you don't take my other advice (which as proven effective in the past) then do this: Get extension cords and a surge protector with 7 or so outlets in it and run the power from another room.
