Angry elephant lifts safari truck into the air, ‘traumatizes’ tourists

An angry bull elephant in Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa attacked a safari truck, twice lifting it into the air and slamming it down as terrified tourists took cover between the seats.

Video posted on YouTube by iReport South Africa shows the attack from afar and from inside the truck.

The driver yelled at the elephant “hey, hey, move, move.” He slammed the side of his door. But nothing worked.

Re: Angry elephant lifts safari truck into the air, ‘traumatizes’ tourists
Our bus was charged by a bull elephant in the same park a few years ago. Pretty scary experience, especially as we were at the front, on a thin track with 5 cars behind us, all of which had to reverse at speed and our car was about the size of 2 golf buggies!

But the elephant gave up after chasing us for a few hundred metres, and just wandered off into the bush.

During the mating season, the young bulls go crazy if they can't get any sex, and they become very irritable. It's hormonal. And this sort of thing is very rare.

For what it's worth, the Thorntree Lodge in Pilanseberg National Park is amazing! Accomodation, food, staff etc., fantastic! We saw the big 5 in the first 24 hours we were there. The guides were incredible. They really know their stuff, and provided the most excellent tours and, despite this video, I would recommend you try it if you get the chance. Better than any other safari experience, and certainly better than a safari on the plains!
