America is a "second chance" place. People who weren't doing well in Europe, but who had a lot of self confidence and could afford the cheapest passage on a ship, came to America to start over. It was a self-selective form of immigration. We didn't get the top people from Europe who had no reason to leave, even before the Revolution, but we also didn't get the scum who could not afford passage or didn't think they could make it work here.
