Some French person would have to give their opinion, but I doubt anyone is surprised he has a fancy watch. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50096557 I'm not surprised he has a fancy watch but the fact that he took it off shows that he knows the wealth divide is not fair. Quoting: DodgerFan Hell I wouldn't even want a watch worth 80 bucks. Tbh 80 is close to a nice automatic watch that isnt far off luxury brands. If you want a fancy automatic watch similar to those expensive swiss watches like rolex and such that will last a lifetime, you have a few options, a cheaper automatic seiko 5, or a russian vostok watch, $50-100 and you are 98% of the way to a rolex anyway, the last 2% is diminishing returns and paying for a name, what kind of retard pays $9900 more for a name. Vostok [link to farm8.staticflickr.com (secure)] Seiko [link to hodinkee.imgix.net (secure)] Honestly only a flexing retard pays 10k USD+ for a watch when you can get perfectly nice ones for around $100 |

Quoting: DodgerFan Hell I wouldn't even want a watch worth 80 bucks. It depends what you get. A fine, self-winding mechanical watch with a perpetual calendar movement typically has 300 tiny parts in a small space assembled by jewelers. The tech is better compared to a car or train engine, not to mass-produced solid state electronics. |

I saw a cringey interview with that Robert Downey Jr. guy who was showing off his ridiculous watch collection. Numerous world class watches each worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. I thought, "what a stupid bastard." This guy could be building a real estate empire with thousands of acres. Instead he has lots of watches. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 85461517 Poland 03/24/2023 10:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The problem with the “I’ve got a Rolex” guy is the fakes are so good most people don’t know they have one. Not to mention a $5-10k watch is nothing special at this point in time. My good friend loved showing off his Rolex. He passed a year ago and his wife asked me to help her sell the 2 he had. Both ended up being replicas that they had bought from a jewelry store. I think most people can tell a guy wearing a fancy watch is either an asshat with a fake or so rich they don’t know what to do with their money. There are nicer watches for less and crappier watches that sell for much more. A watch guy is generally a schmuck. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3716591 This is a cope feel-good story that poor people tell themselves to make themselves feel better. With the used ones, maybe, but with the new ones, it's very easy to verify the authenticity of it. You can check the unique ID and trace its exact route. The profit of the distributor is around 30-40%, so they have zero incentive to sell any fakes, they will get plenty rich just selling the original ones. The existence of this huge undeground market for fake expensive watches which are so well made that they're indistinguishable from the original ones is largely an urban legend. |
