I get it's down to genetics, but does anyone here know anyone, family or friends, who are alcoholics and lived long?

It's wild to me the way it affects people so different.

I'm still young but been a binge drinker the last several years. I take breaks, take my vitamins most days, drink lots of water, eat a good varied diet; but I binge drink. I'm functioning alcoholic.

Lately I've been drinking every other day.

I don't really get hangovers. Yeaj, obviously I'd feel better physically if I didn't drink at all, but I always eat before or during drinking and i drink 100% fruit juice with my liquor. I hate soda and fake juice cocktails; that's what makes you feel really sick.

I usually drink 250-375 ml a night if i drink whiskey or gin. I know that's so bad. Is what it is. I haven't had any liver tests but have recently had blood checked and I'm still pretty healthy. Normal levels of everything in my blood, healthy blood pressure.

I blame the Irish and Italian genes. Do I have a real problem? What say you

I stopped drinking entirely because I'm getting old,and I need to be every bit of health and capability to get through the day. I think drinking would send me into a death spiral.

I went back down the rabbit hole lately so to speak.

I go through periods where I drink very lately, then alot.

If I take cannabis as an edible or smoke once a day I'm good. Makes me want to stay away from alcohol.

But like I said I know I'm a functioning alcoholic.

I blame my undiagnosed adhd and physical trauma I've been through.

Handle of Vodka last me 5 days. I was drinking 10-14 drinks a night at the club. Now Im drinking at home. My liver was enlarged so they sent me for imaging and the girl calls and said the doctor 10 years ago said the same thing, your images are unchanged in ten years, and liver function is still good despite daily drinking and statins.

Dammit man.

That's good to hear though, that your liver still functions good. I guess diet is a stronger factor aswell besides genes.

I do drink alot of water and tea. I love drinking, can't help it.

I drink about 3 liters of water per day.
Not including the seltzer water and cranberry juice I add to the Vodka. I mix about half vodka , half seltzer, lots of ICE and a splash of Cranberry. Careful with your juices. The Sugar content is is probably worse for you then the alcohol.

Nope. It's all in how you drink amd what your mindset is. The mind is a very powerful thing.

I have a very very strong mind so alcohol doesn't affect me like others.

Of course I still get drunk but if I feel I'm too drunk ill Munch a little or drink water.

I've actually been under the influence and had to babysit women older than me because they couldn't handle it.

You're right, mind over matter...

My grandmother is 95 and still drinks 6 beers a day.

A few drinks a day is good for you…thins the blood reduces chances of strokes and heart attacks.

Yep, mind over matter is a powerful tool. The problem is that alcohol affects the mind as much as the body.

Around here, people drink like I can't believe into their eighties and beyond; many are still working in their seventies and get drunk as skunks quite often. It seems that they are actually running on tequila and beer. So physically, they seem to be OK.

The biggest problem with alcohol is the mental decline; coupled with this is the change in personality for the worse. I've learned never to broach unpleasant topics before lunch at any project site :)

A good test of your alcoholism is if you get dts - shakes in the morning where your body literally needs alc. i definitely would not judge you; I’ve done the same it’s named a “periodic” if you can go several days but anytime you drink it’s a binge. (Raising hand lol)

I stopped for 7 years and joined AA and then unjoined suddenly and without regret to just say fuck it for a bit. Like you I am healthy beyond belief, and I attribute it to high beneficial oils supplements and clean eatting. Pro/prebiotics. Minerals, etc. my bilirubin count is always a bit off chart however. (Liver) it’s important to cleans it out - you can do milk thistle, lemon juice shots, or even mix the alc with lemon juice.

As far as genetics. I’ve no clue. My family all die young.

Try and do a one day at a time no drinking for a week and see how you do.

Ps. I should add - physically healthy I am, but down energetically. Depressed - which eventually will effect everything if not dealt with.

Yes, my mother lived until 96…Hard drinking Chevas Rigel daily… but she didn’t eat food…or she probably would still be here…Grew up on a ranch as a child, herded cattle, broke horses…as a child..,Nordic, Welsh, Scottish genes.
.

If your Asian, Or American Indian you shouldn’t drink that much, very little history of alcohol consumption, your body doen’t enough enzymes in your liver to detox ETOH.
