User ID: 84116678 United States 10/03/2022 06:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm here in Punta Gorda. I agree wholeheartedly. It's mentally exhausting to see so much devastation. 9 hours of pure hell. I couldn't take it anymore on the back half of the eye. It was so bad. Quoting: MailSlinger 80403841 I'm a mail carrier here and while I have my own disaster to deal with, it breaks my heart to see my customers going thru it too. I hate that all the focus is on Sanibel and FMB. It makes it look like everyone is rich and destroyed yachts etc. We aren't. Most of the people effected are blue color workers and just trying to get by. We are the ones who work and serve the rich. Charlotte county and Arcadia, north port ect is devastated. We have 2 locations for assistance in Charlotte county. For 200k people! All the other resources are headed south! I have friends who've waited 4+ hours in line for gas only to be turned away. Even I'm mentally exhausted at this point. It's just horrible Thx for posting and for your perspective. I think the other issue is that many folks didn’t have flood insurance bc they couldn’t afford it and now their homes are destroyed. My heart breaks for Floridians whose lives have been turned upside down by Ian. My grandfather’s home is in north port and it backs up to the Myakka River… he’s in Maine right now and we’re confident the house has been destroyed. My aunt and uncle are going down this week to assess the situation. You are the creator of your own master plan... Make it a good one. Wake the fuk up and be ready... Anonymous Coward User ID: 79831996 United States 10/03/2022 06:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I went over yesterday and visited a friend who I lost contact with during the storm and just got a hold of him on Saturday. He is a proud elderly man from Brazil who has a nice house and wife is a Dr. He has always seemed so happy when I visited him in times past. When I told him I was coming to help him with whatever he needs he told me to bring gas because it difficult to get any and they need a generator to keep their remaining food cold. I was coming from Palm Beach County and when arriving in Ft Myers the first thing I saw was flattened trailer parks. When I got to my friends house he started tearing up and told me he had never been so scared in his life and he grew up in Brazil. I can only imagine the amount of work that area will need. Working all day I removed his mangled pool enclosure and started clearing broken and shredded trees from his yard. Im going back at the end of the week. |

These hurricanes are nothing new. My Aunt and Uncle lived through Hurricane Andrew back in 92. I know everyone like the sunshine and warmer temps but c’mon man! You have to worry about losing all your stuff you worked for and hoping your life is spared in the process everytime a storm shows up! Although these homes are very beautiful they were built on swampland and Florida is built on coral reef not a good idea with storms increasing in frequency and intensity,…oceans are warming,… look at Bermuda and Canada getting hit a week ago!! Not sure if they should rebuild these areas or not? Insurance companies are going to go bankrupt and/or going to start charging way unaffordable rates imho. My advice is move to higher elevations where there is colder air. Colder air is much more stable than warm air. Warmer temps feed and increase the intensity of these storms. People have to take weather into consideration when moving in addition to schools and job markets. I think most folks in S.W. Florida got complacent that they historically haven’t gotten hit by a bad storm for the last 100 years so they felt safe. The weather is ramping up and we are seeing storms were we haven’t or don’t usually see them! Good luck and God Bless those people affected by these storms,… Hopefully the news stories in the future will show of net migration to these areas will decrease. Seems like way too many people moving to Florida Texas and the Carolinas (warmer temps) without realising these potential dangers. |

I was in Andrew in 92 and that was a 200mph Hurricane. I was 8 and I still remember our roof flying off and seeing my neighbors home collpase. Alot of people I remember had a sort of shell shocked look about them. I see it here as well. Lots of people walking around just in a trance. They have all the tell tale signs of being traumatized. I'm here on behalf of Florida Emergency management clearing trees and debris from high value/critical infrastructure. While I enjoy the insane amounts of money I'm making, I am not ok seeing my fellow Floridians devastated. There still is murmurs of over 1k dead. The storm surge that hit here did waaay more damage than wind ever could. I saw a 6 story condo with the water line up to the 3rd story!! Thats gotta be 20-25ft. I have smelled death already a couple times but luckily it isn't where I'm working. I'm based here close to the Ft Meyers Auto Auction. I have about a month of work here at least and I was able to hire about another 50 people temporarily while we do storm cleanup. I'm used to my little 13 or so employees so managing and planning for 65 employees is really fucking tough. Anyone here on GLP that is close by and can afford it, please be a good human and load your car or truck with diapers, water, baby formula, and trail mix or food like that, batteries, or blankets and bring them down. These are the things I'm seeing needed most right now. My wife is currently in route from N. Florida where she loaded my 20ft enclosed trailer with 6k worth of supplies for the people (especially the children) in the area I'm working right now. So, this is an update from a GLP'er actually on the ground working the cleanup. Seriously, any Glp'er wanting some green karma in real life please bring some supplies down and just pull into a neighborhood and unload. Its that easy. I will update as I can but its time to get cranked up and go dump the trailers so we can get started at sunrise. I HATE seeing my beloved state so devastated. Blessings to you! |

California is just waiting on a big earthquake and middle America gets ripped up by tornadoes. Many people living in a desert environment so close to not having water. We can’t just empty out whole states because of a bad environment. We just have to deal with it. |

All of Florida is at sea level with the only high spot of 10 feet above sea level. 2. All of Florida is a "sand bar". 3. Move to a higher elevation. 4. There is only one way out of Florida and that is north on I-75 or I-95. Good luck getting out in mass if ordered. 5. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different outcome. DON'T REBUILD...MOVE INSTEAD. |
