A moving target is a lot harder than stationary.

I know, thats what I'm talking about....200m shots where easy even with the older rifle/iron sights.....I always shot Expert for the 8 yrs I served....40 silhouette presentations and I hit 38+ targets each time....I'm not even a great shooter....

180 is not that far for ar-15 with an optic. Not far at all. You can do that at 300 yrds with irons. Not an optic.

Exactly, the average person that doesn’t train would not walk up with confidence and down that target first shot. The average person without combat experience engaging an active shooter often gets that ( I feel like I’m going to puke and shit at the same time) feeling. Not an extremely long shot but done like a pro.

kind of thought it was the getting shot at, leapfrog, shoot and scoot kind of thing. maybe also when the odds weren't entirely in your favor with radios, armor, numbers, vehicles.

While responsibility for every round fired is a given, when you are talking 5.56 NATO or .223 they tend to expend nearly all of their ballistic energy on the first thing they encounter, grossly deforming the projectile. After that initial deformation, the aerodynamics of the bullet are ruined and they lose velocity/power very fast, a matter of feet. It would sting certainly to get hit with one, maybe slight injury such as a bruise, welt or band-aid type of injury... but it would have to hit you squarely in the eye to cause a serious wound.

A bullet from a 5.56 cartridge typically weighs only 55 grains, which is less than a quarter of the weight of a .45 ACP handgun bullet. They just don't have a lot of oompf once they impact the first obstacle to their travel.

That equation changes a bit when you have green tip versions, which are designed to deform less and penetrate more.

My black powder Kentucky 45 hits at 180 yards with 200 grains of 3f pyrotex

180 yards while supported by the vehicle is a good shot but not extreme in any way. It really depends on how much of the target he could see.

He must of felt he would lose the shot if he waited so he took it quickly
