Missing water purification kit and energy meal bars. You won't last long without clean water to drink in real emergency and you will need something to eat to keep you going.

Also if you have to sleep outside you need something to cover you or a makeshift shelter to protect you from the elements. It would have to be easy to fold and to carry in a backpack. I have seen them in stores that sell camping gear.

Also don't forget any medications you might need plus cash plus documents such house insurance, identification, in case your house in wiped out or you need to apply for emergency aid or to pay to stay in motel. All this stuff should be ready to go if you have to rush out the door. There should be no scrambling around looking for important documents nor any meds you need.

Also make sure you have spare tire and can of gas in your car in case you get a flat or run out of gas and all the gas stations are closed.

As for weapons that is entirely up to you how comfortable you are carrying one on you but in a state of emergency you might want some weapon on you for personal protection against looters and other criminal scum that come out in these circumstances to take advantage of the situation.

Some people should not be working with kids. This is nothing new and has been going on for a long time. My mother when she was little girl had her head shoved under the water by swimming instructor who became impatient with her fear of water. A camp counsellor got frustrated with me when I was 5 years old and wouldn't stop crying and threatened to kill me. Needlessly to say that didn't stop me from crying. It only distressed me even more. I also had kindergarten teacher that did nothing but scream at the kids every day and the kicker was she had twins of her own! There are just some people who have no patience with children and shouldn't be working with them.
