It is a challenging read and the first fourth of the book may be too slow moving to keep you captivated. For a while I would read this every 5 years. The movies a a decent representation but they are off putting as the actors portraying the characters are swapped out. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71362965 Same here. Get it from the library so you can take it back if you don't like it. I wanted to like it but it was too money oriented. It's all that people cared about. I don't even like to be around people like that let alone go about the chore to read a book with that sort of characters. That's just personal preference, of course. You may find you like it. Just not everyone does. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82780204 United States 09/04/2022 12:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Reading Atlas Shrugged was life-changing for me. Completely life-changing. I would recommend reading the first 600 pages or so. Really, once you get to John Galt's big speech, you've covered everything the story has to impart. The speech is way too long, way too redundant, and throws off the flow of the book. Read up to that part, glance through a little bit of the speech, and skip to the final pages if you really need resolution or closure on the character arcs. I didn't need it. I don't know why people have such an aversion to this book. I don't think it's garbage. I could never understand how the notion of meritocracy as a benefit to society is viewed as dangerous. Another good one in a similar vein is All the Kings Men (Robert Penn Warren, I think), which is also a good read. Much shorter and also very enlightening. I wasn't particularly impressed with Anthem and wouldn't recommend. For a similar theme, I would recommend This Perfect Day (That Perfect Day) by Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame. I read that before Anthem and thought it was much more effective and utterly terrifying. |

Some people read the books as a painful political exercise, just to be able to say they’ve read them. If so, I would skip it. Other, deeper readers, discover many fascinating things about themselves and their own true and perhaps repressed beliefs. Which are you? |
