Translator of ‘Satanic Verses’ Slain : Japan: The stabbing of a scholar at a campus near Tokyo may be related to Salman Rushdie’s controversial novel.

The Japanese scholar who translated Salman Rushdie’s controversial novel “The Satanic Verses” was found stabbed to death Friday morning.

The body of Hitoshi Igarashi, 44, an assistant professor of comparative Islamic culture at Tsukuba University, northeast of Tokyo, was discovered by a cleaning lady in the hallway of a campus building. Igarashi’s body bore a deep knife wound in the neck and cuts on the hands and face, police said, adding that he was killed Thursday night or early Friday.

Salman Rushdie - latest: Author taken off ventilator as Hadi Matar pleads not guilty to attempted murder

Author, 75, was target of ‘fatwa’ by Iranian religious leaders over 1988 book The Satanic Verses

Sir Salman Rushdie’s agent has confirmed that he’s been taken off the ventilator and is talking as the man accused of stabbing him pleaded not guilty on Saturday to charges of attempted murder and assault.

A lawyer for Hadi Matar, 24, entered the plea on his behalf during a formal hearing at a court in western New York.

Matar appeared in court wearing a black and white jumpsuit and a white face mask, with his hands cuffed in front of him.

Judge details horrific injuries

A judge has detailed the injuries Sir Salman suffered on Friday night when he was stabbed repeatedly.

He suffered three stab wounds to the right side of the front of his neck, four stab wounds to his stomach, a puncture wound to his right eye and chest, and a laceration on his right thigh, according to the county prosecutor, Chautauqua County District attorney, Jason Schmidt, said.

He underwent surgery following the attack and has been taken off a ventilator.
