Most other insects don't bother me, with the exception of the R word (so gross I can't even say it). I kill ants out of necessity sometimes, but don't like doing it. I've learned how to relocate them away from the house, you just lay out sugar fruits and surgery foods and they move towards it. I adore most of my garden insects, just love them. Several varieties of bees, wasps, these adorable yellow white butterfly's, green beetles. Tomfoolery |

User ID: 76646017 United States 08/01/2022 10:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I generally live and let live. I need bees in my garden for pollination. Spiders for the most part help keep the mosquitoes down. Exceptions are paper wasps and yellow jackets. I eliminate their nests when possible as they can be extremely aggressive. Venomous spiders such as black widows also get the boot. I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |

Quoting: E CaT PanTHer However I'm starting to feel really guilty lately everytime I swat one of these creatures. Is killing insects morally wrong? Do insects feel pain? Does the Bible condemn these killings? Will god judge me in the afterlife? Been having the same thoughts. I’m a life long hunter, although never for sport. Now when I kill a bee I think, did it suffer? Weird |

I kill flies and mosquitoes. I never ever kill spiders. If I find them in my house during the summer, I gently trap them and take them outside. If I find them in my house in the winter, I take them to the garage. Killing spiders is bad luck. Last Edited by nutmeg on 08/01/2022 10:13 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82375160 United States 08/01/2022 10:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do they feel pain? While it is clear that insects have the capacity for pain indicator responses, they totally lack the needed infrastructure to "feel" anything. They can respond to damage, and this can look like our own response to pain, but they cannot perform the needed mental processing to feel. Their simplicity means that your killing them is not, in fact a thing that will produce pain in the way we understand it. Is it morally wrong to kill insects? This one question could be a book! Instead of hitting all angles of the issue, let my summarize my own personal take... Since it is unavoidable to prevent the death of insects in your daily life, it would be wrong of anyone to proclaim such deaths a moral problem or issue. That said, it might be ecologically wrong, if you kill too many insects in a needed zone, say with massive spraying, or things like that. But no, it isn't morally wrong. If they are in your way, killing them is fine, within reason. Will God judge you for it? First, God, the way you are thinking of it, doesn't exist. So no. That aside, I believe the bible gave dominion of the Earth and Seas to mankind as a steward. This means culling, as well as curing, aiding as well as exploiting. The bible also covers the kinds of allowable insects to eat, which seems to be allowing for their deaths... I think you're good, given that. |

Your choice to react on the other hand is rooted in much more sophisticated programming and your sovereignty is being tested to see if you act or react. |

They're very destructive and are destroying crops and trees....June through November. Since June, I have killed hundreds. They are attracted to birch trees, and I have two large River Birch trees in my back yard. What I don't understand is ....if God created everything, what is the purpose of the Lantern Fly? I must admit...they're pretty. I feel awful killing them, but I like my trees. |

I hated them as a kid and waged war on them but like you I learned to respect their uniqueness. Some bugs like mosquitos and ticks we can be at war with, that's ok. They wanna eat us so all's fair in war, eh? Snakes too. The things I feared as a child have become a fascination for me. They are some amazing critters. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83946828 Just a hunch. Perhaps we have love in our hearts for all creatures, large and small. Try it someday. It's a good thing. Cats are great....but they should be kept indoors and petted often. If outdoors, they kill birds, rabbits, etc. |

I feel terrible when I'm digging in the garden and my shovel slices a worm. What can you do? It's like Robert Burns' poem "Ode To A Mouse". He feels the same when he knows those mice's winter nest is ruined all but guaranteeing them certain death in the harsh conditions. Mosquitoes I am torn as well. When I feel the bite, my hand often takes a life. I wish it weren't so, but it is almost reflexive. This must be part of how our world is "fallen". One day the lion will lie down with the lamb. |

Keep food available and most cats won't hunt birds but shrews and mice they can't resist. Also make your yard bird un-friendly near ground level if you do have outdoor cats like me. No open water on the ground, keep lower branches on shrubs clipped, no tall grass for cats to hide in - that sort of thing. I did have a near-disaster a few days ago. Noticed cat going in to stalk mode and I saw something caught in a spider web. I assumed it was a cicada flopping around but it was a hummingbird. It got itself free. Gen. John B Gordon and Gen.
