It’s certainly not common.

I guess you could get a step up transformer, but 480v is dangerous stuff and why it’s so uncommon for residential..

Typical home chargers are 240v @50a max which is sufficient for most charging needs.

In my opinion, the battery tech has a ways to go yet.

I worked with Nimh tech years ago for the ev1, and we have made major improvements since then, but still a long ways to go.

Maybe solid state tech…

Yup, I had three phase and regular service on my building for 26 years, and I paid two electric bills...On one page...but there are two meters on the building...Using a dedicated 220 breaker on your home panel would be the way I would do it...When they get the bugs worked out...

If they wanted to fully charge that battery like that, it would take about 2 weeks of running that little generator and about 20-30 gallons of gas.

I like charging my tesla with a gasoline run generator to anger the haters. Gubmint hits combustion cars with huge fees while EV's have zero taxes or fees added. Fueling the car by gasoline makes petrol heads MAD!!!

Depends on the charging level, the maximum power output of the charging station and max power intake of your EV. There are 3 levels of chargers:

• Level 1 (120 volt) charging 20 Amps
• Level 2 (240 volt) charging 80 Amps
• Level 3 (480 volt) Supercharging or DC fast charging 300 Amps or 144kw.


For comparison an average home is 240v 200amp = 48kw. So to rapid charge a Tesla = 3 residential services at full tilt.
Or..
Seven pipeline welders @ 200amps welding non-stop for 30mins to go 170 miles.

Thread: Electric cars are just fancy go carts. The "breakthrough" needed is battery innovation to make them practical.

A 2000 watt generator will take DAYS to fully charge a Tesla.

Honda does not make a 2 cycle generator.

Many dont care about the "green" side of it. I drive a 6.0 V8 guzzler muscle car but have considered a Tesla, that instant torque, self driving, and plugging in at home is cool.

Will still have a gas car but electric has some cool attributes.

If your out in the boonies or on a big road trip a generators not a bad idea for these things.. but would just take the gas car in the first place.... If your only gonna have one car I dont think pure electric is your best option

They come in 48 or 72 amp versions. The 72 amp version figures out to be only 15,000 watts.

Regardless, that little Honda will only put out about 13 amps at 110v (not 220v like the tesla wants). That would be like charging a Tesla with a 6 amp charger (at 220v).

You're not going to be able to charge it and get back home. Maybe a couple hours of charging to get you a few miles to a charging station.

Lets do some math!


It is said the 48 amp charger will charge the battery at 40 miles per hour of charge. So, with a 6 amp equivalent charger (like the Honda jenny...), that is approximately 1/8th the charging speed. This means, its about 5 miles per hour of charge.

So, if you're 2 miles from the charging station, wind up the Honda, get a cup of coffee and a half hour later you can nurse it a couple miles to the charging station. Heading home thats 10 miles away? You better run it for 3 hours.

My guess, though, is that the charging electronics in the Tesla require 220v which that Honda does not have. So, I think they're out of luck.
