QLike Christian rumors that Jesus was white, I have been hearing that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was white skinned. They say that it is in Quran that he is white but I have never seen that, although I admit I have not gotten all the way through the Quran. I know a person's race is not important at all in Islam, but am curious if these rumors are true. Can you tell for a fact if he is white and if it is actually mentioned in the Quran?

Short Answer: As far as the color of the Prophet’s skin, Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) described him as being “WHITEISH WITH A RED TINGE.” (source) At the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), people with a skin color that we now call white was described as being “yellow” in Arabic. The manner in which Ali ibn Abi Talib described the Prophet’s skin indicates a light brown color. It is true that in the eyes of Allah, our skin color does not indicate our worth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) famously said that an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, and vice-versa; that Allah only cared for a person’s piety.

Narrated Rabia bin Abi Abdur-Rahman: I heard Anas bin Malik describing the Prophet saying, "He was of medium height amongst the people, neither tall nor short; HE HAD ROSY COLOR, neither absolutely white nor deep brown; his hair was neither completely curly nor quite lank. Divine Inspiration was revealed to him when he was forty years old. He stayed ten years in Mecca receiving the Divine Inspiration, and stayed in Medina for ten more years. When he expired, he had scarcely twenty white hairs in his head and beard." Rabi'a said, "I saw some of his hairs and it was red. When I asked about that, I was told that it turned red because of scent."
