Anonymous Coward User ID: 80795476 United Kingdom 07/13/2022 04:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think they're amazing. Back in the 1960's they created rockets that exceed the 25,000MPH needed for 'escape velocity', even though the fastest plane on earth is Nasa's own X15 which tops out at 7000MPH. What feats of engineering! Then in the 1970's, to the the side of these rockets they strapped a big fat plane/shuttle thing. That plane does not create a weight/thrust imbalance or drag problem and the rockets can still exceed 25,000MPH just like they did back in the Saturn V era. Furthermore, they astronaughts are able to withstand the 17G's that travelling at 25,000MPH for 2mins 30 seconds it takes to leave the atmosphere. 9G's kills most people, but not those trained by NASA who had special G force resisting suits. I think it's amazing how they overcame the thermal exchange issue. In space the side of anything facing the sun is about 1250 degree C, the side in darkness is about -280 degrees C. The LINE between the two goes from -280C to + 1250 C in the space of a millimetre and does not simply shatter or degrade. When the space capsule was going to the moon they apparently 'boosted' the cold side with an internal heating system needed to balance the internal and external temperature, and they super cooled the hot side from 1250 to maintain a comfortable temperature inside. Furthermore, as the capsule was slowly rotating they managed to move the cooling systems in parallel with the dark/light on the hull. Apparently they used fibreglass and cork with a mylar coating to protect them from the savage atmosphere. incredible engineering! Finally, when the capsule re-entered the earths atmosphere it bounced along at 25,000MPH for about 3 mins. Once again, the men of steel resisted the 17G's and the 5000 degrees C that was melting the heat shield, but the capsule remained intact due to it's 3/8 of an inch thick steel and resin heat shield. The capsule was then slowed from 25,000MPH to 3 mph by the parachute. Nobody inside was juiced by the negative G shock! You have to hand it to them. They were giants! |

We need to put them back up to the Apollo level of funding if we ever hope to put boots on Mars. Quoting: Captain Cosmos Putting boots on Mars is the stupidest objective I can think of. Massive outlay of money for zero gain. Find a planet that actually can be colonized. (one that has an atmosphere, a protective magnetic field, etc). Mars ain't it.
