Personally, I'm done paying.

Everyone in my family has said that they're treated very rudely as a tax payer, but very politely when showing up as a poor person to collect.

I will start collecting. I've paid long enough and sick of seeing the trash that my money goes to.

Not big and it's full of kids. But I made a wall of the cases in the laundry room. All shelves are full in my kitchen , I got a free third fridge since it had no shelves. I keep the rice and pasta in it mostly and it's in the garage. The dog food is the only thing in the way right now.

I was laughing as I read through that list.
Things got a little rough for us too, and after seeing the lines at the food bank, we decided to check it out.

I couldn't believe how much food they stuffed into the trunk. More that we could ever eat in a week.
So we did what you did. Started hoarding it away.

I had so much peanut butter and cereal, I had to give some away to friends. They almost demand that you take certain items. The produce is usually old, but the canned meats, and vegetables are gold. Even frozen meat.
I picked up a cheap freezer at a garage sale.

Have you ever seen so much cabbage?

Don't try to be middle class poor and collect. They will treat you rudely. They have two different income levels at the food bank too. I don't get things people on food stamps get. They get two extra boxes of items I do not, like cheese. And they get double the rest. It doesn't make sense to me .

I have been hesitant to post this before but single mom here with no budget for food at all. They say I do not qualify for anything because I work two jobs to pay the inflated rents. So I was forced to go to the food bank.
I had no idea most are funded and supplied by the USDA. And we get mucho cases of food each week.
To date ( and this is after eating only this food too all since November with kids) this is my stash.
I have eight cases of beans (24 cans)
5 cases of peanut butter
10 cases of canned fruit
40 lbs of assorted dried beans.
A case of powered milk.
A case of instant potatoes industrial size.
About 300 lbs of meat enough for three freezers anyways.
5 cases of macaroni cheese.
20 lbs of butter.
50 lbs of pet smart dog food I don't need more but could have had 150lbs by now.
A case of spaghetti sauce.
Case of tomato m cans
50 lbs of rice.
55 lbs of pasta.
Two cases each of large size tuna, chicken and salmon.
One case of canned ham.
3 cases of carrots.
Two cases of corn
One case of beef stew.
One case of corned beef hash.
One case of tomato soup.
One case of dried prunes
A case of brownie mix.
Two cases of rolled oats
3 cases of raisins
And enough fresh vegetables to plant for a large garden, I have sweet potatoes growing already.
I'm still going each week for the milk and eggs and I am planning to have enough food to share and barter if things get worse .I sleep better knowing I do have food prepped. Hope this helps someone else. It's your tax dollars don't feel bad .

"The Salvation Army wants you to get your hands on free food for your family"

“If you need any food help, please come see the Salvation Army,” said Major Ken Perine with the Salvation Army of Spokane.

They have a lot of non-perishable food options from canned foods, to pantry staples and some perishable items. They want families to be able to focus their finances on staying housed instead of groceries.

“In this past year, the price of groceries has really skyrocketed, and that’s really hitting families in a very negative way,” Perine added. “We just want to encourage folks if they need any type of food right now, come by, see the Salvation Army. Save their money to pay their rent and utility bill, but get your groceries from us.”

Re: I prepped courtesy of the Govt without trying.
Good for you.

You sound very resourceful.

When the SHTF the hardest part will be the first few weeks when everybody is scrambling around like headless chickens.

Then there's the long haul survival.

There's no telling what will happen first, but more than likely it will be a domestic attack on a large city, like small nukes, or dirty bombs. Everybody will be scrambling around pointing fingers, and the government will be slow trying to figure out what benefits them the most, not really caring who the real culprits are.

Martial law will be the first major obstacle, which will make it very hard to get groceries after all the panic buying has emptied the shelves.

You don't want to take part in the panic buying if you can help it!

You really need the calories for the long haul survival if you need to set up homestead living.

Make sure you have plenty of things to barter.
