If the pistol had a "hair trigger",
He might have discharged it without realizing it. Just by shifting or adjusting your grip, you can accidentally cause it to fire, if your finger is already on the trigger.
I would not expect such a weapon to be on a set like that or at least that some one would have informed the actor or armorer of that condition. Since it could cause accidental discharges, making it a potential problem.

It would seem that it could cause an excess of retakes, as it might fire (in untrained hands) at the wrong time, ruining that take and forcing additional takes thus increasing the costs involved in filming.

It would have to be cocked first. Which makes firing it a very deliberate act.
