Remembering Pearl Harbor
The anniversary of the attack is today.

I offer no major links, just a reminder that it is today. Will attend an impromptu prayer meeting at the Killed In Action memorial.

my only personal remembrance - took care of a relative, perhaps a son, of Kimmel, as a nurse.

Kimmel was the scapegoat on the American side. He was writing a book about what he felt was the railroading of his relative.

Yes, In 1995 I had my first nose surgery after an injury while in training.

Later, would discover I received the gift that keeps on giving with a nosocomial infection with a lower intestine bacteria from the procedure.

I dreamt I had worms within my nose, and I did.

Dreams do come true.

Pearl Harbor to get us into the war to sacrifice more lives.

My Grandfather fought in WWI, lied about his age to get in.

Pearl Harbor Day, 1941-

He heard about it, went and signed up that day to fight,
leaving a wife and three kids to defend his country.

Luckily, he survived the war, and returned a hero.

Never have I met a more patriotic man.

Sad he was deceived, but I honor his sincerity so much.

Good morning Beeches.

NCIS Hawaii had a nice episode last night about Pearl Harbor.
A hundred year old dude was to be honored at a ceremony but at the last minute it looked like he was a traitor, but in the end it was evident that he was a spy, but for the US. And the ceremony went on as planned. I thought it was a great episode.

I hope there are some good Pearl Harbor movies on TV today.

second story at [link to www.ketv.com (secure)]

On this day in 1941, more than 2,400 Americans were killed in a surprise military attack on the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

The attack was carried out by the Japanese Navy Air Service and struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his advisers knew a Japanese attack on the U.S. was probable after diplomatic negotiations between the two countries broke down.

However, nothing had been done to increase security at Pearl Harbor leading up to the attack.

The attack was carried out at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time by more than 350 Japanese warplanes.

We are indeed fortunate that our loved ones made it back. My Uncle Frank was also at Normandy, and made it back OK.
I remember my mother telling me how she will never forget the screams from a neighbor, when the black car with a Chaplain and a couple of officers pulled up in front of the neighbors house, to inform the neighbor that her son had been killed in combat.

My maternal grandfathers brother, my great uncle, was part of the resistance in Europe. He was killed by the Nazi's. Some of the family had migrated here in the early 1900's, and some stayed in Europe.

Re: Remembering Pearl Harbor
Hindsight is 20/20, you know. But very few people were unaware that another Great War was underway, and the US was going to be a participant, probably sooner than later.

If our intelligence people didn't know what was afoot, they should have. But like I said, hindsight gives a better picture. Kimmel's predecessor at Pearl Harbor tried to tell them that he felt that Pearl would likely be Japan's first strike, and that's not what Washington wanted to hear, so that was a big part of the reason Kimmel replaced him.

Nimitz saved our ass, we're told. That's the big luxury of winning a battle or a war: you get to take credit for it. And likewise, if you're the victim of a sneak attack, it's all your fault.

I hold Admiral Raymond Spruance in very high regard. He was a quiet, brilliant, and extremely lucky man. Six months after the Pearl Harbor attack, there was a skirmish to the south at a place called Midway Atoll. During those six months, the Jap had been having a heyday. They expected Midway to be another easy win for their superior strategists and fighters.

The famous and flamboyant Admiral Halsey should have been in command at Midway, but he had a bad case of shingles. Spruance was chosen to fill his shoes. Spruance had no carrier experience.

But a strong argument can be made that if Halsey had been in command, Midway would have been another Japanese victory. The Japs had a productive morning, up to around 10:30, and then,in the space of six lucky minutes, a big chunk of their navy went to the bottom of the Pacific.

Not sure how much of this gets covered in the recent Midway movie. In contrast to Halsey, Spruance wasn't much of a self-promoter, and it seems like most historians glance over the fact that he was key to the battle's outcome. Sometimes he doesn't even get mentioned, since he was actually the junior commander of the American forces (Frank Fletcher was in overall command, but when his boat took a hit, he passed the baton to Spruance).

There was a great deal of pilot heroism that day. They were crucial to the victory, too, and many didn't return to their carriers. But I contend that dumb luck played the biggest role. Naval historians don't often acknowledge that, but it's the truth.

And if Spruance, or someone equally lucky, had been in command at Pearl Harbor on December 7, that's about the only way things would have turned out differently. As someone noted earlier, Nimitz's analysis that if we'd known the attack was imminent, we'd likely have vacated Pearl, and that could have made for an even uglier day. Sneaking up behind the enemy's sneak attack would have been the best move, and that would have required unimaginable luck.
