Since different planes have their vents in different locations, this could easily explain the visibile differences noticed in trails from the ground. Regardless of whether we're talking about the 'chemtrail' conspiracy or the publicly acknowleged cloud seeding programs, it would still be the ideal way to go about it with large passenger jets.
