Anybody that thinks that is water hitting molten aluminum, I have a bridge to sell you.

Nope. Anybody who works with large amounts of molten aluminum, knows, that is real shkt. You are just a dumbfuck nobody..

I don't even know what you said. You might try learning English.

I am one of the top Chem E's in the Country. Although I don't know much about aluminum refining. I know it uses lots of electricity. I know about normal smelting processes like lead and zinc smelting using fluidized bed roasters then a reducing atmosphere smelting process. Als I know hyrdrometalurgical processes, but aluminum I know is different. But it cannot produce the results in the video.

I know you can make normal thermite that does not explode, but burns hotter than hell.

I know that the twin towers were dropped with nanothermite, that does act as a medium speed (quieter), explosive.

I know that thermite is the only thing that can explain the persistence of molten iron temperatures in the WTC rubble as long as a month after the towers collapsed. Le Chatelier's principle explains it beautifully. Exothermic reaction with plenty of reactants reaches dynamic thermal equilibrium once a certain temperature is achieved. As heat is removed from the pile, (firefighters poured absurd amounts of water on the pile, trying to cool it down), the reaction simply proceeds a bit more to the right, releasing the precise amount of heat to once again, stall out the highly exothermic reaction.

Science can be beautiful as it uncovers deceit.

Your assertion that I am a nobody, shows your ignorance, since you don't know anything about me other than a couple of words on a message board. What a pathetic ass you must be.

Anybody read the article besides me? From the postings it doesn't appear so.

*Plant is located next to a river.

*Major flood. (it is flooding in China right now in case nobody noticed)

*They evacuated the plant.

*Flood wall around the plant collapsed letting the flood water in all at once.

*Flood Water hit the smelting area all at once

*KABOOM!!

*So far NO injuries reported since they had evacuated the plant.

The ferocity of that explosion, with multiple visible shock waves, and white hot explosion tells me that explosion was caused by high speed explosives, or a gas with a lot of double bonds in it, like ethylene, or butadiene.

Damn sure was not steam coming off water hitting molten aluminum.

Thermite from aluminum shavings and rust does not explode. It burns fierce as hell, but no explosions, sorry.

Smelting Aluminum from it's Ore is an Electrolysis Process.
There is no "molten" aluminum in the separation of Aluminum from it's ore.

.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73460998

Actually, there is. Here is the process.

[link to www.britannica.com (secure)]

"The smelting process is continuous. Additional alumina is added to the bath periodically to replace that consumed by reduction. Heat generated by the electric current maintains the bath in a molten condition so that fresh alumina dissolves. Periodically, molten aluminum is siphoned off."

Looks similar to normal smelting, except they use electricity to reach the smelting temps.

I know a LOT about Hydrogen.
Calling it a hydrogen bomb is misleading as hell, because a hydrogen bomb refers to a 2 stage nuclear fission/fusion bomb.

Hydrogen gas is very easily ignited in air, just a static electricity spark will light it, but it produces a lower energy flame than carbon containing gases. And certainly cannot produce a high speed unrestrained detonation like in the video. And it does not burn hot enough to give white light.

Like I said before, the main gases that can make that kind of explosion and give off a blinding white light contain double or triple carbon to carbon bonds. (or of course any of the commercial explosives, TNT, AN, etc. )

The military has developed nanothermite I believe to make smaller bombs that carry more power than conventional explosives. The only way they do this, is by the gel sol process to make nano particles of Al and Iron oxide in intimate contact with one another. The explosive reaction speed is then achieved by the simple movement of the Oxygen atoms from the Iron to the Al, yielding molten iron microspheres (as was found throughout the WTC dust).

ALuminum metal in the aluminum smelter is under a reducing atmosphere (carbon monoxide primarily), that reduces the oxidized form of aluminum to the elemental form, when heated electrically. The CO grabs the oxygen from the aluminum and makes CO2.

If you watch the Hindenburg footage you can see that it burns like a huge flame. Not a concussive detonation.

I agree with your statement about Chlorine. Ton cylinders of liquid chlorine can wipe out a town. When I was young I had to learn how to respond to a leaking 2000 lb liquid chlorine cylinder. (That was the way we chlorinated cooling towers, before someone finally wised up and started using bleach.

I just don't see how an explosion that big happens unless munitions were involved. Don't know about a mini nuke but a serious fuck-ton of tnt.

I do recall a rocket fuel plant going up like that but we're talking rocket fuel here. An aluminum plant? come on man!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80571574

Powdered aluminum gives solid rocket fuel an extra kick. Solid fuel is amonium perchlorate composite, it actually bounces and when unpressurized burns like paper. When you get a big pile of it on fire it can all go at once. I’ve started campfires with APC in the rain with wet wood, works great.

Powdered aluminum is a component of thermite too.

Maybe the plant was a mixing facility?

Interesting, there are several explosions.

You ever ignite a soap bubble filled with hydrogen and air? It’s loud
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80634390

Yes, but the hydrogen burning reaction speed is far short of a high speed explosive.

You can detonate it in a test tube and you get a gentle pop.

Try that with acetylene and the tube will shatter and the glass will likely be inside your body.

Explosive speed and power are dictated by the distance oxygen has to go to react, coupled with how much energy will be released once it reacts.

Commercial explosives and nanothermite, place the oxygen ultra close to the atom it will react with.

Hydrogen gas needs to bring in oxygen from the air to the bulk gas to react. This is simply too far a distance for a sharp highly destructive shock wave to be produced in an unconstrained burn.

Also, The oxidizing reaction of hydrogen does not give off as much energy as carbon to carbon bonds.

The shock wave you can see in the video narrows down the possibilities rather quickly to either a commercial high speed explosive, or a double or triple bond containing hydrocarbon gas.
I think NOX could also do that, assuming you could get it hot enough to begin with.

OK, so you have changed from a hydrogen explosion to a metal-water reaction.

I agree that Lithium will react quite impressively with water.

Aluminum? meh, I would need to see it to believe it. On a large scale, the same problem happens. Large mass of molten aluminum must contact the water from far away. and before it cools off. But must be finely divided enough to react, but that almost by definition means it will be cooled off.

I admit I am not omniscient, but I would not place any bets on that being able to produce that sharp shock wave and white light.

Just showing a building that collapsed can easily be explained by the simple vaporization of the water into steam in a semi contained vessel, then breaking free. But no white light, and no shock wave that you can video tape.

Anyhow, it is getting late. Thanks for the rational discussion (finally). :)
